Description: Corowal talks to Vestian about recent events
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 13, day 25 of Turn 7
Corowal had sent a message to hallmaster Vestian to set up a meeting.
With the Gather approaching, they had lot of common events to
organized. Then there were the incidents at the hold. Just thought of
them made Corowal frown. Hall needed to be informed, just in case they
would spread to include the Harper and Printers and their female
apprentices too.
It didn't take long for Vestian to be ushered to the Lord Holder's
office and when he was announced, Vestian entered with sharp,
interested eyes. "Good Morning, Lord Corowal. I trust you are well."
"Good morning, Master Vestian, I'm well. I glad you were able to come
over. I expect that the approacing Turn over is keeping you as busy as
I am," Corowal stood to greet him and gestured him to take a seat.
Vestian folded himself into the seat and leaned back to get
comfortable. "It is indeed. The ball we are planning as well as a
possible future expansion is keeping the entire hall busy with
preparations." He laid his hand on his knee and studied the Lord
Holder. "What can I do for you today?"
"It's the upcoming Gather I want to discuss with you," Corowal said
"Among other things," he added.
Nodding, Vestian's fingers played over the arm of the chair. "Of
course. The Harper Hall is planning a masked ball for the Turnover
Gather and are allowing anyone with a mask to attend. Knots will not
be worn, so it should prove to be extremely interesting."
"Are you going to rival with our party?" Corowal asked teasingly.
Vestian's brows rose. "I?" He flashed a wry smile. "You could always
just attend mine. Be daring."
"You mean sneak off from my own party?" Corowal laughed.
Vestian shrugged with a roll of his shoulder. "I'm sure it would be
nothing new to you." He steepled his fingers. "I hear you're having
some problems."
"Yes," Corowal's face turned serious. "Some people are taken to
themselves to vandalize those with connections to Weyr. There might be
risk that it spread to the Hall too. If they don't like dragonriders,
they probably don't like female crafter's either. "
"I've not had occurances in the Hall, but I'll keep it in mind and
keep an ear low to the ground." He mused over the past few weeks.
"Would the Hold being willing to spare a few guards that have no
problem with female crafters?"
"I see what we can do," Corowal replied. "We have already increased
the patrols around the main hold. It would be easy to extend their
routes to include the Hall too. Due the approaching Gather, the guards
are bit streched thin right now."
Vestian waved a hand, negating it. "Don't worry about that, then.
Let's not stretch the guards past their capacity." He tapped his
fingers against his lips. "These problems you're having...they're
connected to that incident at the Weyr, aren't they?"
"Yes, they are. We have suspects, the injured guard's family, but we
can't do anything until we have _proof_," Corowal replied. "If your
harpers hear something, my captain of the Guard would be greatful of
their help."
His lips pursing, Vestian considered the Lord Holder. "I hear many
things, Lord Corowal. " He had quickly learned to place his eyes and
ears in important places, even before he came to be Hallmaster. "I do
believe they befriended a few Harpers and asked for a few songs
rallying their cause."
"Names, I need names, "Corowal said.
Vestian's brows shot up. "Even if I were to give you the names I was
told, it's only rumors, Lord Corowal." Even if he personally knew them
to be true; he had faith in his little network of eyes and ears. "And
it's spread past those people now. I've heard of people not wanting to
tithe because it'll go to the Weyr and even some Harpers have been
asked not to use some of the teaching ballads that involve the Weyr."
"Any little tidbit of information you can provide will be helpful,"
Corowal said. "I need to stamp down on this before anybody gets hurt.
So far it's just been vandalism: insults painted to walls, windows
broken or doors smeared with manure."
Musing, Vestian tapped his finger on the stem of his glass. "I can
tell you that one of the people who approached my harpers was
Cronfur's wife. She's upset that her husband's face was permanently
rearranged. She may have intimately traded for a few songs to be
written. What came to my ears was that she wants that weyrling
punished publicly for what he's done. She and Cronfur's brother are
trying to push sentiment towards just that."
"We might have missed her, thank you," Corowal dipped his head in
gratitude. "We need to counter that somehow."
"I'm working on it." Vestian's lips lifted with satisfaction.
"Oh? Is this going to affect the selection of the songs you're going
to perform during the Turnover?" Corowal asked. This was just the kind
of intrigue he enjoyed.
"I wouldn't want to give away the surprise." Vestian's smile didn't
waver for an instant. "You'll find out if you decide to make an
appearance."
"Now, I can't resist offer like that," Corowal grinned. "Jumping from
subject to subject. My son Ofewal is now twelve and after the
Turnover, free of his harper classes. He has expressed his wish to
apprentice to Harper craft."
"Then of course, you may send him. We're always in need of good apprentices."
"What? No questions asked? You don't know if the boy has any talent or
not?" Corowal asked with amused tone.
"You know better than that. He'll be screened, just like any other apprentice."
Corowal just nodded. Of course he had know that.
