Description: V'kellyn meets River Bluff's newest goldrider.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 7
The first rays of the morning sun were peeking through th cloud cover
when V'kellyn and Xenderayth made their way to the feeding pens.
V'kellyn understood that the young dragons were hunting now and he
wanted to observe and get a feel for this class. Being a restday,
there would be no classes which suited him as he'd just as soon not
have his first encounter with the weyrlings be during regular lessons.
}:Anaeryth is sleek for such a young gold. I like the way the
sunlight plays along her legs:{ Xenderayth commented appreciatively.
V'kellyn's attention was immediately focused on the young queen and he
noted the more willowy form and long legs on the young gold dragon.
Anaeryth had settled far above the pens, her eyes whirling with a
mixture of hunger and anticipation. She eyed the milling herd beneath
her, searching for just the right one while other dragons, both
bronzes and browns watched. She, of course, knew that she was being
carefully watched by the males, but didn't glance at them for a
moment. Her focus at present was on her potential food. She crouched,
spotting the young male herdbeast below and flexed her talons against
the hard stone. With a burst of energy she was in the air and dove,
talons extended while the herd scattered in panic. Her attention
remained on the running herdbeast and with a snatch of her talons, the
bawling beast was lifted. She carried it easily, landing with a light
skip of her legs. The herdbeast continued with its panicked cries
until the gold calmly bent and bit off it's head to quiet it, then
spit the head out beside the now still corpse of her meal.
"She does that every time." A cheerful voice came up behind V'kellyn
and Lanniya walked up, her long hair pulled back from her face with a
simple band. "Hi! I'm Lanniya, Anaeryth's rider." She offered her
hand. "Who are you? I don't think I've seen your bronze before." She
turned to the bronze and nodded, with a smile. **Hello to you as
well.**
}:Hello goldrider.:{ Xenderayth replied, amused, never having been
addressed directly by another rider in such a manner. }:Anaeryth
hunts well.:{
Taking in the willowy form, strawberry blond hair, bright blue eyes
and dimples, V'kellyn offered a slow smile as he shook the friendly
girl's hand. "I'm V'kellyn, rider to bronze Xenderayth here," he laid
his hand companionably on his lifemate. "We've just transferred back
from Vista Point, though we were both born here."
"It's nice to meet both of you." She dipped a quick curtsey that in
her light airy dress, made her look like a blooming flower when she
rose. She glanced at his knots and tilted her head to the side.
"You're a member of our Weyrlingstaff then?"
}: Yes, I do. :{ Anaeryth interjected, tearing off a haunch as she
looked over the new bronze with some interest before going back to her
meal.
"That's right," he replied, thinking that Laninya was indeed an
interesting goldrider. She seemed quite the free spirit with a
naivety about her that was refreshing but frightening as well.
Thinking how much he had changed from his weyrlinghood, V'kellyn found
himself hoping that the harsh realities of Weyrlife would not change
this girl too much. "What do you think of your weyrling training thus
far?"
She thrust out her lower lip in thought, but it didn't take long for
her to answer. "I like the outdoor lessons much better. Sitting at a
desk is so _boring_. " She huffed playfully and rolled her shoulders,
then bounced on her bare toes a bit. "I like to be actually doing
things and I guess we're starting that more now that we're flying. "
She turned to her gold and smiled warmly at the memory of their first
flight.
"I seem to remember feeling much the same way when I was a weyrling
but there'll be plenty of doing from here on out," V'kellyn said
struggling not to laugh at the rather whimsical picture she presented
in her bare feet and airy dress. "Your first flight went well I take
it?" he asked, noting the smile.
"We did perfectly." Lanniya replied with a hint of pride in her voice.
"Anaeryth wouldn't have had it any other way." She grinned. "I'm
excited about the lessons now. I'd rather be outdoors than cooped up."
Yes she definitely had the self-assurance of a goldrider which was
good as she would need it. "You should enjoy next sevenday with the
long distance flights and hunting the wild herds then," he observed.
"And the aerial drills will get more complex."
"I'm so excited about that." Lanniya exclaimed, light in her eyes. "A
chance to stretch Anaeryth's wings and to see everything from the
air." Her toes curled against the ground as she took a deep breath.
"Even though we're not going to be as quick as the greens or the
blues, I'll get to learn how to use a flame thrower finally."
V'kellyn chuckled. He certainly couldn't fault her enthusiasm. "How
long have you been at the Weyr?" he asked curiously.
She paused in her reflection over the flamethrower to think about his
question. "Since month seven, so not that long really, but I really
love it hear. Now when people say I'm a little crazy, they're joking
about." She paused and then grinned widely. "At least, I hope they're
joking."
**You are not crazy." Anaeryth finished her buck with a neat nibble
and finally gave Xenderayth her full attention. The young gold tilted
her head at him, considering the older bronze.
}:And you, lovely one?:{ Xenderayth asked of the now satiated gold.
}:Are you looking forward to hunting the wild herdbeasts and
stretching your wings for a longer flight?:{
Unable to restrain a hearty laugh, V'kellyn shook his head. This girl
really tickled him. "Well, a little bit of crazy never hurt anyone,
though it must be nice to be around those who understand the voices
that you hear. When did you realize that the voices were dragons?"
The compliment made Anaeryth croon with approval as she moved to sit
by Xenderayth and gift him with her full attention. Her wings settled
on her back as she bobbed her head. }: I am. I am most impatient for
it. The weyr is not big enough for long flights and my wings are ready
for more.:{
Lanniya had to pause and think about his question and her brow dipped
as she tried to recall the exact moment she had realized what she
heard. "You know, I really don't know when I knew. I just did. It
bothered my grandparents, because they thought I was hearing things
and my mind had cracked, so I didn't talk to them about it. I just
kind of knew. I didn't talk to them when they were flying Thread;
that's when I usually heard them, so I'd just listen. I didn't want to
distract them when they were so busy. I knew they were protecting us
and it made me love them."
"That has the makings of a Harpers tale," he noted. "It sounds as if
Weylife suits you well, and that's certainly a good thing. Some
people find the adjustment quite challenging."
}:Yes, as a queen, your wings are strong and well grown, but then you
must serve as the example for all the smaller ones who are just barely
ready. They look to you, of course, as their role model so it's
important that you wait until they're ready so that they do not come
to harm. I'm sure that the other young ones already look to emulate
you.:{ Xenderayth noted, both giving the young queen her due and
acknowledging his role as adviser to the younger generation.
She shrugged. "Not really. It wasn't that exciting most of the time.
It was just normal for me." Her brow furrowed. "But you're right about
some people not adjusting. I'm worried about A'dryn. Maybe you could
speak to him? He's my friend and I guess I don't really know how to
help him."
The gold eyed the older bronze for a long moment. }: I can do that. I
would not want them hurt. :{ She agreed readily. }: I will learn to
guide them properly so that they do not cause themselves harm. :{
}:I am sure you will do an excellent job. You will make a fine
leader.:{ Xenderayth assured the young queen.
"Oh? I'd be happy to speak with him. What is he struggling with?"
She struggled for a moment, unsure as to whether she should share more
than A'dryn would want or if she should just nudge V'kellyn in the
right direction. "Uhm...I don't want to embarrass him, but he's not
comfortable being a greenrider, I think." Her voice lowered. "I think
he's ashamed of himself for Impressing his green and maybe he should
talk to another male greenrider like him?" She shrugged a little. "I
don't know. I just want him to be happy."
}: Yes.:{ Anaeryth bobbed her head. }: I will be. :{ The statement was
simple, but assured, as though she had little doubt that she could
accomplish whatever she decided.
"I understand and appreciate your discretion as well as your sharing
this with me so that I can try to help. He is not the first to
struggle with accepting his new role. He's lucky to have a friend
like you who cares. That will certainly help him through it his
transition."
"If I can help, I will." Lanniya's expression flickered with
seriousness, unusual from her normally cheerful demeanor.
"Just continue being his friend," V'kellyn encouraged. He looked
toward the feeding pens, noting the other young dragons making their
kills. "I should let you get on with your morning, but we'll talk
again soon, I'm sure. It was very nice to meet you Lanniya."
"I'll see you again soon, I'm sure." Lanniya nodded and turned her
gaze to the feeding dragons. "Thank you, by the way." She waved her
goodbye, and in a much better mood, half skipped back to Anaeryth.
