K'ran had chosen one of the most run-down and quietest bathing pools to
soak in. His back had some scratches from an overly-enthusiastic flight
moth on it and he wanted to get clean after what had happened. After
greenflights he tried to just go back to his weyr and ignore the
dragonlust, but a goldflight had been too strong. Especially this one,
where he and Rogueth had both wanted to win it with all their heart and
soul.
He hadn't expected the strength of these feelings. When he'd talked to his
brother about Genna, he'd still been convinced they were just friends.
That thought reminded him of the conversation they'd had

Corran had gone to the Tavern to keep an ear out for any more unsettling
rumors, just like Karhal had asked him to. He was expecting to drink
alone, or maybe see a friend who he could spend a bit of time with. He
wasn't expecting was to see his twin brother there. As soon as he saw the
fact that was as familiar to him as his own, he changed his direction and
walked over there.
"What's a nice bronzerider like you doing in a place like this?" the guard
asked with a broad smile.
K'ran looked up from his drink and smiled. He was glad his brother had
showed up. "Dropping by to see my favorite brother, of course. How've you
been?"
"I've been alright. It's been interesting here," Corran said. He wasn't
sure how much he should say about it in public, but it was the kind of
situation he wouldn't mind bouncing off his family at some point.
"Interesting, huh? How's your firelizard doing?" K'ran asked.
"Warden's doing well. He's asleep back in the guard tower. I don't bring
him down here because he doesn't like the crowding and noise very much,"
Corran explained. "How about you, has anything changed at the Weyr?"
"Things go as they usually do. Onnyth's latest clutch just hatched. Her
last clutch is being put into the wings."
"That was the clutch with the gold egg, right? The one Impressed by the
girl from here?" the guard asked.
K'ran winced slightly, wondering how his brother had picked up on what
he'd wanted to come talk about. "Genna. Yes, she Impressed in Onnyth's
clutch."
Corran narrowed his eyes, picking up on the curiously flat tone his
brother had just used. "Is something wrong with her?"
"Something's wrong with _me_," K'ran said. He sighed. "I took her to Ista
shortly after she became a senior whirling. She'd never left the South,
she wanted to see somewhere different. I enjoyed going and spending time
with her, and I thought maybe we could be friends."
Corran snorted. "An older bronzerider and a young goldrider leaving the
weyr together for the beach? That doesn't sound like friends. It sounds
like you're courting her."
"I guess that's what she must be thinking, because now she needs to
"
K'ran looked around, lowered his voice, and leaned forward over the table.
"She needs to take care of something before Lissath rises. And she asked
me on a date. And I think she wants me to do it."
Corran pursed his lips and whistled. He knew about his twin's lack of
interest in people in the way of men and women. They'd had discussions
about it several times before. Corran's own appetites were healthy, and he
hadn't understood his brother's reticence even as he'd respected it. "And
how do you feel about it?"
"Conflicted. She's really nice and I like her. I might even like the date
part, even though I'm terrible at it. I mean, you know me. But the rest of
it
" K'ran looked distressed. "I don't really
know what I'm doing for that
kind of thing."
"Well, do you want to do it?" After all, if his brother had no interest in
the young weyrling in that manner, he should just say no.
"I feel like someone who likes her should. Someone who sees Genna the
person and really likes her, not just someone looking for an in with her
for when Lissath first rises."
"You think there's many people who'd fall in the latter group?" the guard
asked.
K'ran snorted. "A lot of bronze and brownriders would. Maybe they're not
actively thinking about it, unless they're real cads, but it's the kind of
thing that lingers in the back of the mind. I think she deserves better
than that."
"And since you're not that interested in winning flights, you think you
qualify?"
"Yes," said his brother.
"That means you might be the right man for it. But I notice you haven't
said yet that it's what you want," the guard pointed out.
"That's because I don't know if I do," K'ran said. "I know I like her as a
friend. I don't know if I like her as she really should be liked for
that
kind of thing."
"You mean you're not sure if you want to romance her?"
"Exactly."
"I don't think you have to know that yet," Corran said after a moment of
thought. "In the Hold that's generally what you have to do, but you're
both weyrfolk now. She has to get this done because it's a dragonrider
need. You're a good candidate for her because you like her as a friend and
you're not thinking of ulterior motives like promotion. Think of it as a
favor between friends, not as a romantic gesture."
"Isn't that a crass way of looking at it?"
"It's less crass than someone doing it for the in for the flight," Corran
retorted. "I think you're overthinking this a little. It doesn't have to
be true love. It just has to be you doing a favor for her because you're
gentle and you want her to be okay. Anything beyond that can come later."
"I guess you're right," K'ran said to him. "But what if I - "
"I'm not going to be your advice on doing it right. For that, find another
weyrfolk," Corran said mock-severely.
"You got it," the bronzerider said with a laugh. "Anyway, how have things
been for you?"
"Ah, that's a whole 'mother story
" the guard began.

The bronzerider sighed. He'd told Corran they were just friends. But now
that the flight was over, he realized it wasn't true. He liked Genna. He
_really_ liked Genna. At first it had been friendship between them, even
when he'd taken her out on their 'date'. He hadn't expected the crushing
wave of disappointment he felt now. Lissath should have chosen Rogueth,
not Kenirath. He should have been holding her in his arms, not D'kere. The
first ever goldflight they had wanted to win, and he'd lost it
and
discovered something else.
He had no idea what to do with himself. He was beginning to feel like he
needed to have another feelings-related talk with his brother.
