Eirock

Eirock

Eirock relaxed into the hot water, which felt wonderful after working
with the ground crews after Threadfall this evening, and reviewed the
last few days in his mind. His time with Rhosyn had dispersed his
mounting tension and he was better able to consider events
objectively. Rhosyn was an intriguing woman in that she yielded
probably as much power as any woman on the Southern continent yet was
as unconventional as they came. There was no denying that he was
drawn to her brazenness and passion and quite frankly he liked her.
She didn't trust him, which probably spoke to her intelligence. He
found himself wondering what it would take to earn her trust.
Ultimately, she was of the Weyr and he was not so, though part of him
would honestly enjoy pursuing more of a relationship, something beyond
an occasional evening of physical pleasure, he knew nothing could come
of it.

As he stretched causing the water to lap over his well-muscled torso,
his mind shifted to Sophque. In many ways she seemed to be the
antithesis to the Weyrwoman. Yet she also had a keen mind and
harbored a subtle sensuality. Where Rhosyn gave the appearance of
being strong and in control as well as boisterous and outgoing,
Sophque showed a quieter resolve and inner strength that gave way to a
sweet friendliness. In contrast with Rhosyn, who Eirock believed
might always hold a piece of herself back from him, he truly believed
that were he to successfully woo Sophque, she just might give herself
over to him completely. Admittedly, this excited him in a way he could
not explain, but as he'd noted to himself a few days ago, Sophque was
not some wanton drudge to be set aside after having his fun. She was
the type of woman that you married.

Herein lay the big question. Was he interested in marrying Sophque?
He had been seriously considering a wife and was undeniably attracted
to the diminutive seamstress. Eirock believed he could come to care
for her, possibly already did. This was actually disconcerting to the
Steward who had always kept people at arms length. Though he would
very much like a loving marriage like his parents had shared, he was
uneasy about letting himself care too much for someone. In his
experience, those you cared for the most wielded the greatest power to
hurt you. Not to mention that loved ones could be used by others to
manipulate a person. He should know, he'd done so on more than one
occasion.

Of course he didn't have to fall in love with Sophque in order to
marry her, he realized as he dunked his head under the water emerging
to shake beads of water from his dark locks. Most marriages were
arranged after all. There was little political merit to the union,
but that was unimportant to Eirock. Actually, he took pride in the
fact that his success thus far was due to his own ingenuity and not to
a marriage alliance. Morin's bequest came to mind, but he shook his
head, a frown on his face. Those marks should be set aside as a dowry
for Sophine as recompense for losing her father or used however
Sophque saw fit. The generous endowment still puzzled and disturbed
him somewhat, but he pushed that aside for now.

Scooping up some sweetsand and rubbing vigorously, the Steward tried
to determine exactly what he wanted in a wife. Obviously, he wanted
someone with whom he could enjoy physical intimacy. He wanted someone
who would provide him with children and be a good mother. Beyond
that, though, it would be nice to be with someone who was supportive
and stable during the difficult times rather than flighty and
capricious. Sophque would make a good wife.

But was she interested? Oh she'd responded sweetly to his teasing and
the man smiled as he remembered her flushed cheeks. There was no
denying that she had returned his kiss, but the reality was that she
had pulled away. He needed to know why.

Tomorrow he would seek out Quellen and after that, perhaps he would
see what progress Sophque had made on the tunics.
