Eirock

Eirock

Pouring himself a drink, Eirock then sat heavily into the big chair in
his sitting room, glaring at the pouch he had yet to deliver and
thinking about earlier. Generally, he went after what he wanted
whether it be a position, a business deal or a woman, but when Sophque
had pulled away, he hadn't pursued. There was of course her
reputation to consider, but then he'd never stopped to worry about the
reputation of the other hold women he'd seduced.

Taking a gulp of the whiskey, he tried to ascertain why exactly he
felt the situation was different. Sophque seemed to have a kindness
about her, a goodness maybe. He felt protective of her. When he'd
found her in her cot during the hurricane, part of him had wanted to
rage at her for being so reckless. He certainly was glad he'd learned
to temper his reactions over the turns.

Seeing her with her daughter and then watching her offer support and
comfort to people in the shelter made him all that more aware that she
was different than women he'd been with before. She wasn't the type
of woman you slept with for a few months until the novelty wore off.
Sophque was the kind of woman you married. That realization was a
little unnerving and he finished his drink in another gulp rising to
pour himself another glass. Despite his mother's tenacity on the
subject he hadn't given marriage a significant amount of serious
thought.

Of course he had always intended to marry and have a family but doing
so had seemed something for the future. Since settling things with
his uncle, his focus had been on his career and other lucrative
dealings. Marriage had always been a consideration for another day.
Arranged marriages were the norm and Eirock had never expected to
marry for love, though he hoped to find someone he could at least come
to care for. His parents had been very much in love and for the first
time he wondered if something like they'd share might be within his
grasp.

Talon arrived just then, chittering away excitedly. Before coming to
rest on Eirock's shoulder. The Steward absently reached to scratch the
little bronze's eye ridge and was surprised at the clear image of
Sophque he received from the flit, accompanied by an inquisitive chirrup.

"Yes, she's very much on my mind."

Talon offered a musical trill and sent the image again.

"No, I don't think it's a good idea for me to go see her right now. I
think some space might be in order, at least for a day or so." Or
until he figured out exactly what it was he wanted from the
seamstress. Why had she pulled away? Was it her reputation? Or was
there someone else? Or perhaps it was him? He certainly had a
questionable past, but she'd know nothing of that. Maybe she could
just sense the darkness in him, just as he sensed the light in her.

He plunked his drink down heavily with an audible sigh, causing Talon
to spread his wings and complain irritably. The idea that she might
have pulled away because of some failing within him was not one he
cared much for. She had responded, though, there was no doubt about
that and a slow smile came to his face as he remembered that kiss. He
gave himself a shake earning another chastisement from the fire lizard
on his shoulder.

This was ridiculous and completely unlike him! Checking with Quellen
about the status of the orchards was already on his to-do list so he
would do so and ask about Sophque at the same time. Sitting around
making suppositions based on one kiss and her withdraw was pointless.
He would set all thoughts of Sophque aside until he had more
information to go on and then he would reconsider. Pleased to have a
plan, Eirock picked up his drink again and relaxed back into the chair.

There were other things that required his attention. He had yet to
deal with his cousin and needed to make certain that Bryvin was okay
with his plans regarding the minor Holder. His mother would be
arriving soon, after having had to delay her trip due to weather and
other personal reasons. Turnover was fast approaching and there were
other things happenings about the Hold that bore contemplation. As
he allowed these other matters to take over his thoughts, he tried to
ignore the memory of a certain kiss and brown eyes that sometimes
seemed golden that hovered insistently at the edge of his consciousness.
