K'sedel

V'kellyn rapped on the Weyrleader's door, thinking that when he left, U'das
was sitting behind that desk. He didn't know much of K'sedel, but the
Weyrleader had held his position and provided stability and continuity for
River Bluff, so V'kellyn was inclined to believe the man must be doing
something right. Though confident in his decision to transfer back to River
Bluff, the bronzerider was yet uncertain precisely what role he'd be
filling. Whatever it was, he and Xenderayth would do well, of this he aw
certain.

"Come!" called the Weyrleader.

Entering the office, V'kellyn surreptitiously noted the differences from the
last time he'd been here, but most of his attention was focused on the man
before him. Lean and wiry, the Weyrleader was average size but something in
his hazel eyes and the set of his jaw spoke of exacting standards which was
fine by V'kellyn.

"Weyrleader, Bronzerider V'kellyn reporting for assignment. My duty to
Nikornath," he said in a calm even baritone stopping short of K'sedel's
desk, standing straight with his hands behind his back in a parade rest
position.

"And mine to Xenderayth," K'sedel said after a moment, the dragon's name
supplied to him by his own Nikornath. "Please, sit. Can I offer you some
refreshments, klah, or a cold drink maybe?"

V'kellyn relaxed and took a seat. "Something cold would be much
appreciated, sir, my thanks."

"You're welcome," K'sedel told his fellow bronzerider, even as he reached
for a glass and a pitcher of iced juice. "The weather here can take some
getting used to, even if you've lived here before, I'm sure the healers will
tell you when you check in with them that you'll need to keep drinking."

"One of those healers is my mother and another is my sister," he said with a
wry grin. "I get all the lectures _at least_ twice," he answered,
though if he were honest family was the main reason he'd returned.

"And you have your papers?" asked the Weyrleader.

"Certainly," V'kellyn gave a nod, his tone more businesslike as he
pulled the documents from his pocket and handed them to the
Weyrleader. Having dispatched his duties effectually both as a
Wingsecond and as a Weyrlingmaster Second, V'kellyn was confidant that
any reports from his previous Weyrleader would prove satisfactory. Of
course he could be very exacting and was sure there had been some
complaints that he was both driven and demanding, but he believed he'd
always been fair and never asked more than he himself was willing to
give. When working with the weyrlings he'd always tried to be very
aware of their capabilities and never push them beyond what they could
handle.

It took experience to learn to scan the documentation quickly and find the
salient points without making the rider on the other side of the desk feel
uncomfortable. "Experience as a wingsecond , and with training the
weyrlings. Which do you prefer?"

V'kellyn would be content with whatever placement he was given, but
since K'sedel had asked he offered an honest answer. "I've come to
enjoy working with the Weyrlings. Flaming Thread is satisfying and of
course what dragonriders are meant to do, but I've found a fulfillment
in training the weyrlings that goes beyond even that satisfaction."

"Hmm." K'sedel sat back in his seat for a moment. Some would see working
with weyrlings as a demotion, others were dedicated teachers who could get
the best out of all the youngsters that crossed their path. "I can't offer
you a wingsecond role, but we do have a spot free for a good
Weyrlingmaster."

"I think I would enjoy that challenge very much," V'kellyn said his
brown eyes serious. He knew there would be heartbreaking accidents
and losses, but he also believed that a good leader could minimize
such unpleasant happenings. "I've come to realize how very important
the training of both our young riders and dragons can be."

K'sedel nodded as he heard those words. "Then, if I were to offer you the
slot, you'd accept?"

V'kellyn looked the Weyrleader in the eye and paused, not because he
lacked confidence, but because he knew good and well that by accepting
the position, he was also accepting responsibility for the deaths or
injuries of the youth and young dragons of the Weyr. That wasn't to be
taken lightly. "I would," he answered rather solemnly, thinking of
his nephew who even now lay abed recovering from a significant scoring
received during blooding.

The Weyrleader leaned across the desk, offering his hand. "Then, may I be
the first to congratulate you, Weyrlingmaster."

Accepting K'sedel's hand, V'kellyn inclined his head, "Thank you, sir."
