Bryvin was almost finished with their weekly business when he reached for a hide that had been turned over on his desk.
"Just one more thing," he nodded at Eirock. "Morin left a bequest I'd like you to handle for me. It's a tidy sum to be settled on someone here in the main Hold. I'm not fully familiar with the reasons for it but the man did have his favorites."
He pulled a small chest out of a lower drawer. "Here is the initial portion with the balance to be paid out over time."
Eirock nodded, such things were not uncommon. Many a stableman,
canine trainer, or even just personal attendant found favor with their Lord and were remembered in such a way. "Certainly, who is it to go to?"
"A young woman of the hold. There is a note attached that seems to imply some guilt over the death of her husband." Bryvin waved his fingers in the air. "Morin was most generous with widows and orphans. Sophque, I believe the name is."
Eirock looked up sharply at the name. "I thought her husband was lost at sea," he commented before he could censure his reaction. His feelings were mixed when he considered the idea of Morin leaving Sophque an endowment. Certainly it would be helpful to the seamstress and enable her to better care for Sophine, but why had he left it to her specifically? She couldn't have been the only one widowed when the ship was lost.
"Yes, he was," Bryvin nodded. He'd gone through the records with Fymer when there were ship wrecks of home port ships Morin had provided support in various fashions to the families. "I believe she was found to be with child about the time they discovered the ship had been lost. I know she worked here in the Hold but even there, the bequest is rather generous."
"Indeed, " Eirock nodded his agreement as he pondered the other man's words, his curiosity piqued. "Well, it will certainly be helpful, I'm sure. Sophque is a talented seamstress, but it's probably been hard. I'll see that she receives this initial installment and make her aware of the ones to come."
"Good," Bryvin said and pulled another hide toward him. "Now the
matter of the mine," he mused. "It seems the profits have tailed off a bit. I'm thinking that someone has their thumb on the scale. Any ideas?" He wasn't accusing Eirock, they knew each other too well for that, but their 'planned' overseer hadn't arrived at the mine and that 'fact' could have allowed someone to put more lining in their pocket than Bryvin normally allowed.
"Chjrad," the Steward answered definitively. "He's only just smart enough to pull it off but not smart enough to hide it well. Also, he has a very attractive and demanding wife who he wants to keep happy. He would be easily intimidated, though, and could then prove very useful. You would of course know nothing of this, my leverage would be your finding out and banishing him," Eirock's smile was predatory and unpleasant. What he didn't add was that the man would be an excellent fall guy if something happened to go wrong.
Nodding in agreement Bryvin stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Press him and make sure he realizes you know what he's doing," Bryvin said and then turned his attention to another report.
"Have you gotten to the survey of the other hill yet? I need the
feasibility study completed before we can even begin planning building in those ruins."
"Yes, here's the report. They have found more than was expected. There was a substantial structure and the footings are still in place. The original building foundations will be easily repaired to serve as the base of the building. If we were to rebuild and follow the plan for the first floor as closely as we can to the original structure, progress would move quickly. Then if we used this current building for administration, I do believe three stories would be more than
adequate to accommodate the growing needs of the Hold."
"Excellent," Bryvin replied. "Let's be sure to expand the hurricane shelter there as well so no one would have to try and cross the bridge during a storm. I think there are even people taking shelter in the lower ruins currently."
"Yes, you're right. I'll make sure to ask the architects about that."
Bryvin nodded. The results he was getting with Eirock were very
satisfying and though he hadn't brought him entirely into his
confidence he was beginning to believe he could at some point. "How are we coming on the search for Yarmel? I know Yriadha is impatient to know what happened to her son."
"The local people have had no luck, but the trackers you recommended have not yet returned. "They seemed very," Eirock paused, choosing his words carefully. He knew one of those men, by reputation at least, though he had no intention of admitting as much. "Experienced," the Steward finally finished.
"I'm sure they will be discreet in reporting any findings. Having spoken to a few people, it seems Yarmel might have made a few enemies. Foul play would not reflect well on your new administration. It certainly would prove most efficacious should they either find him alive or having succumbed to some aspect of nature." Eirock looked meaningfully at Bryvin, quite certain the hired men would be reporting directly to the Lord Holder and not to himself. Also quite certain no one would be finding Yarmel alive. He was always cautious about anything said aloud within the Hold, though.
"Alright," he nodded. "Let me know when you hear anything." Bryvin was satisfied Eirock would take the appropriate action and they both understood how this needed to work.
