A Restday Walk

Description: Delynn meets Zakis on a walk to the falls.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 7 of Turn 7

Delynn

Delynn

After the previous day's storm, Delynn was pleased to see that the sun
was out, promising a pleasant restday. Not that she planned on
resting the entire day. There was far too much to do! Still, she
could do with a walk and it would be pleasant to gain more familiarity
with the greater Hold area.

Once she had checked with the kitchen staff, Delynn made her way
towards the river. The hydro power plant and technicians workshop as
well as the docks were on the edge of the rapidly flowing waters. She
found the falls breathtaking and was pleased she'd chosen this
direction rather than her other plan which would have taken her to
the other side of the gather square towards the greenhouse and
vegetable gardens.

Zakis hadn't intended to go to his workshop today, really he hadn't.
But he'd left some of his notes there, so he had to hurry along the
path towards the workshops. He slowed as he saw an unfamilar figure,
not wanting to seem undignified. "How goes?" he called when he was in
earshot.

Turning with a smile Delynn responded, "Very well, thank you. How are
you this morning," she paused taking in his knots, "Journeyman?"

"Please, call me Zakis, ma'am." He extended his hand with a broad
smile, one that lit up his brown face. "I don't think I've met you
before."

Accepting his hand and offering a solid shake, she answered, "I'm
Delynn and I'm quite sure we haven't met yet. I was just hired as
Headwoman this past sevenday. It's good to meet you, Zakis."

He kept smiling even as he let go. "Is this your first time in the area?"

"Oh no. I was born and raised in the Emerald Falls territory before I
was married and moved to the Healer Hall. My cousin is Holder at
Merry Brook just east of the main Hold," she said with just a hint of
pride. Her grandfather had been forced to leave his Hold after the
plague and it was a matter of family honor that a relative was once
again in charge of it. "How about yourself?"

"I've lived several different places. My dad's a Master Technician, so
we traveled. I did my training at Jade Harbor Hall to get a proper
Hall education, rather than from a Hold Master," he added with a touch
of pride.

She smiled. The Journeyman had a right to be proud of his
accomplishment as it wasn't one everyone could claim. "What did you
think of Jade Harbor?" she asked having spent several turns there

herself.

"I loved it. Being right on the beach was lovely, as was walking
through the citron orchards."

"Yes the beach was magnificent, particularly at sunrise and sunset and
the orchards and gardens were wonderful," she agreed with feeling,
having a passion for nature in general.

He was on the verge of saying more, but stopped, feeling faintly
disloyal to his place of posting. "But the falls here are nice for a
walk,"

"They are indeed, And there's a change of season here. Though I'm not a
huge fan of cold weather, I do like seeing th snow now and again."

"It makes you appreciate spring all the more, huh?"

"Absolutely! I love spring and early summer. I like to see all the
new growth and most especially the blooms. Had crafting ever been an
option for me, I might have considered the farmercraft because I do
enjoy gardening and seeing things grow. Luckily, one hardly has to
craft to do a bit of gardening and I can do that and enjoy the
position I'm in now as well. Or at least I could before. I'm sure
I'll be much busier here so only time will tell."

"I'm glad you enjoy gardening, at least." Zakis had spent time in Weyrs,
so her assertion wasn't as heretical as some. "And Sapphire Meadwows is
beautiful, I've been a couple times. I bet the farmercraft hall is
lovely."

"I actually haven't had the pleasure, but I can well imagine. So how do
you find your position here? The hydro plant must keep you busy."

"Oh, it does. There were some cracks the other month. We had to work out
trading for parts and labors with the Smiths."

"Intercraft bartering must be quite interesting," Delynn observed
speculatively. As a Headwoman or even assistant she had done her fair
share of trading Hold goods for services. "I hope you were able to resolve
the issue. I certainly wouldn't want to face making turnover preparations
with no electricity."

"There are some Holds that aren't wired, and isn't that a shame?" he
asked. "But your Turnover plans are safe, my lady."

"That is a relief! I'm hoping to keep everything running smoothly for
the big celebration. Were you here for last Turnover?"

"I was not. I only transferred in in the sixth month," he said. "But
so far I'm enjoying it here."

Delynn smiled, "Yes, I believe I'm going to find it quite to my liking
as well. There is plenty going on, and we have a nice assortment of
crafters not to mention the riverboats come in and out. Plenty to
keep a body busy."

"It's a lively place to be, and there's certainly far worse climates,"
he agreed.

"Well, Zakis, it has been a pleasure to meet and talk to you, but I
should be moving on. Just because it's restday doesn't mean there
aren't things to be seen to," she said with a smile. "I'll look
forward to seeing you around the Hold."

"You may regret saying that when you're seeing me at a late candlemark
when there's a leak, my dear Headwoman," he replied with another
irreverant smile. "Enjoy the rest of your day."
