Wirnan

Wirnan

Now that they'd seen Dwidara and her children safely to their rooms,
Wirnan led the way back to their own quarters.

"Thank you for your help today. You did a good job with the children,"
he remarked as he opened the door to their rooms.

"They're sweet." Kaya commented as she studied the marks that
remained on the fabric of her dress. "I should treat this, see if I
can get it out." It was possible, but if not, she'd have to figure
out something else. She glanced up at her husband, offered a small
smile, then disappeared into her room. Although things were better
betwen them, they still slept in separate rooms save for when Wirnan
desired more intimate company. Despite that, their marriage was still
filled with tension and distrust at times. Kaya couldn't blame him.
In all honesty, she was amazed that he treated her as well as he did -
and it was one of the things that had finally pounded its way through
her stubbornness.

Attempts to relieve the fabric of the stains were not entirely
successful. Eventually, Kay simply left the fabric to dry and adorned
herself with another outfit. She emerged, then set about putting the
kettle on the small fireplace in their room. "Care for some tea?"

Wirnan went about his own tasks while Kaya changed. He checked over a
few hides he'd left to read in the evening. Having finished with those
he would be ready for the next day's work come the morning.

After that, he sat back on the sofa, arms folded behind his head and
closed his eyes for a spell. The next thing he knew, Kaya was speaking
to him.

"Tea?" He asked, blinking away the sleep from his eyes. He took a
moment to process her question, before answering, "Yes, thank you, tea
would be nice."

With a positive response, she set out two tea cups along with
sweetener, then waited for the water to heat. "I think I'll have to
send the dress to be dyed. I don't think the stains will come out."

He turned his head back to look over the sofa at her. "I'm sorry to
hear that it won't come clean. Whatever it costs is not a problem.
Choose a nice rich color you like. It was a good thing you did today.
You're good with children," Wirnan had to look away for a moment as
memories washed over him. The ache from the loss of their babe was
still painful.

"She just needed a little comforting, that's all." Kaya's voice was a
half murmur as she sifted tea leaves into the pot. "Dwidara's next is
due soon, too."

"Aye," Wirnan replied with a faint smile. He enjoyed being an uncle,
even though there was an emptiness he felt inside for not having a
child to call his own.

"The babe should be here before the end of the Turn if all goes well."
He knew his sister and brother-in-law were excited to welcome the new
life into the world.

Without thinking, Kaya lay a hand against her abdomen, then let it
drop. They wouldn't be welcoming a child. Would they ever? Now that
things had improved, she had thought maybe she would conceive again,
but every month it was the same. "Do you want sweetener in your tea?"
Suddenly, she found herself veering off of the topic - and wanting it
to remain on something different.

"Sure," Wirnan replied. He'd noted her slight movement and had had to
turn away. He didn't know why they hadn't conceived a child again.
Things were better between them, even though they weren't necessarily
consistent. Perhaps_that_ was the issue, but he couldn't force things
between them.

"What else do you have planned for the eve?" He asked, also deciding
it would be best to chance the topic before he brooded too long over
it.

"Nothing much. I thought I'd work on some drawings." As she poured
the tea, she cast a glance back at her husband, then set aside the
kettle. That done, she picked up the cups and offered one to Wirnan.
"Did you have something you wished to do?"

"Nothing specific," he replied, taking the cup and wrapping his hands
around it to allow the warmth to seep through. "I'd actually prefer
_not_ to do any work for a chance. I think I might just need a new
hobby of my own! I've been so busy lately I haven't done much. I love
spending time with the runners, but sometimes I wish I had something
more to do, especially when I'm here, at home for a nice quiet
evening. Like tonight for instance." He gave a slight sigh. "I wish I
could draw or do something like you do. Your talent amazes me, but I
wouldn't even know where to begin."

"I'm not really qualified to teach, but I could try." Any training
Kaya received had been done on the side and long before she met her
husband. Although a part of her wished she could take more lessons,
she also didn't want to cause trouble by learning what others might
consider inappropriate for a woman. "If you're interested."

"I think I'd actually like that Kaya," Wirnan replied, "I'd like to
know how you do what you do. I'm sure I won't be very good at it, but
at least I'd understand it better."

At that prospect, Kaya's eyes immediately lit up. "I'm not very good
at it, but I'll teach you what I can. Do you want to start after
you're done with yor tea?" It would be nice to have something in
common, to do together.

"Sure," he replied, sipping from the warm cup. "I'm curious to see how
it all works." It was a few moments of quiet between them as he
finished his tea.

"The tea was perfect. So now that we have this whole evening, I'm
ready for my first lesson," Wirnan found he was actually eager to see
if he had any talent in the area.

"Well then." Kaya pushed herself to her feet. "Let me get some
supplies and let's get started.
