N'call got to G'nir's door but he didn't knock at first. Instead he
paced for a moment. He couldn't deny he was nervous. He had no idea
why the Weyrleader wanted to see him and could only assume he was in
some sort of trouble. Finally he took a deep breath and knocked.
"Please, come in," G'nir called. He fingered absently with N'call's
file. Up until now he had pretty much ignored N'call, considering the
young bronzerider too young to be serious rival or to ranking
positions. But he had won two gold Flights in row now. It was time for
G'nir to pay attention. His duty to the Weyr was clear, even if it
meant training his future competition for Weyrleadership.
He pushed the door open at the invitation and stuck his head in. "You
wanted to see me sir?"
"Yes, I did. Take seat, please. How is Onnyth and the eggs?" G'nir
replied. His smile was polite but lacked real warmth.
"She's fine," N'call nodded with a more natural smile. "Haloth doesn't
want to leave her side." He sat in the chair opposite G'nir. He wasn't
completely comfortable in the big office though his eyes roamed the
room taking in the stacks of hides and piles of maps.
"Good to hear. Haloth's won Onnyth twice in a row now, something worth
of congratulations," G'nir remarked.
"Yes sir, thank you sir," he smiled. "Does it ever get old?" He was
genuinely curious. There weren't many other riders at Dragonsfall
other than G'nir and J'darin who'd won multiple gold flights and he
still found it hard not to feel the euphoria whenever the thought
about it.
"No, it doesn't. It's always a marvelous experience," this time
G'nir's smile was genuine.
"It's time for you to get some leadership experience, " he continued,
getting back to business. "You might already heard that J'darin is
stepping down after the graduation, so they need help with the
weyrlings. Also there's wingsecond's place open, you like to try your
hand in that."
"Yes, sir," he found himself saying once again. At one time N'call had
a bad case of Hero worship for G'nir and it was quite flattering to
think the Weyrleader had noticed him. Though he was realistic enough
to realize it was Onnyth who had notice Haloth so he couldn't really
claim to be exceptional. He took a deep breath. "Yes, I have heard,
and I'm very sorry about it," he looked down at his hands. "Do you
really think I could do that?"
It wasn't that he lacked confidence but he knew the loss of the
Wingsecond had been quite a blow. P'nal had been quietly competent at
his job.
"I would like to circulate you in various positions, to see what fits
you best and to give you more experience," G'nir continued, explaining
his idea further. Oh, yes, he was definitely training him to become
serious rival. But the Weyr badly needed more experienced, seasoned
bronzeriders. They had plenty of good brownriders but most of their
bronzeriders were under thirty Turns old. Of course, the situation was
same in all Weyrs. "Besides, I desperately need someone for Azure wing
until I can find a new wingsecond. P'nal won't be easy to replace."
"No he won't," N'call agreed. He only paused for a moment but then he
nodded solemnly "Of course. I'll do whatever you want me to do."
"I'm glad to hear it. Now, I still need to discuss this with K'ran,"
G'nir replied.
"Right," N'call acknowledged the point.
"Wouldn't want him to accuse me stealing his wingriders without
consulting him," G'nir said with smile.
N'call smiled back at the Weyrleader. "Of course," he said. "Where
would you like me to start?"
"How about from learning wingsecond's duties," G'nir suggested.
He couldn't imagine G'nir could have anywhere near the confidence in
him that he'd had in P'nal but he would give his best and use this
opportunity. Even knowing it was temporary until the Weyrleader found
a more experienced Wingsecond. He had much to learn and he knew it.
"I'll do my best sir."
