Ilyssia

Ilyssia

Aluka was excited, almost to the point of giddiness. Two days of
composing and more of practice had paid off. The composition was
perfect, as it should be: It was meant for a friend who had rapidly
become very dear to him. So since the night was clear, Aluka bundled
up warmly, grabbed his gitar and made himself visible outside,
assuming Lys would be so eager for her present that she would come
looking for him.

He was not disappointed, and Ilyssia soon appeared with a glowing smile on
her face. "You'll be happy to know Gwynnyth's first flight went well
despite the fact that her rider was completely distracted with
wondering about a certain gift."

"Your first flight? Congratulations!" Aluka said brightly, smiling at
her. "So glad the anticipation didn' do ya any harm." He chuckled.
"All right, all right. I guess I've kept ya in suspense long enough."
He took off his gloves and stuck them in a pocket, setting his fingers
to the strings. "I don' have many friends, but the ones I have mean a
lot to me," he said frankly. "I wanted to express that, and give ya a
gift as well. So I wrote ya a song."

"Gwnnyth's first flight, not ours together," she corrected before his
words registered. "A song? You wrote a song for me? Luka, that's,
that's," she shook her head overcome with emotion.

"That's still worth a congratulations," Aluka pointed out, and as the
expression of awe stayed on Lys' face, he played the opening chords,
then swung into the song itself, singing with delight, with passion,
with complete sincerity. "You could say I lost my faith in science,
and progress;
You could say I was abandoned and left in the lurch.
You could say I lost my sense of direction.
You could say all of this and worse, but
If I ever lose my faith in you,
There'd be nothing left for me to do.

"You could say I was a lost man in a lost world;
You could say I lost my faith in the people meant to lead.
You could say I lost belief in Lord Holders' positions.
They all seem like charlatans to me-
If I ever lose my faith in you,
There'd be nothing left for me to do, hey hey!

"I could get lost inside those lies, without a trace;
But every time, to my surprise, you take their place.

"Never saw no Lord Holder's ruling
That didn't go from a good thing to a curse.
Never saw no desperate solution
That didn't always end up as something worse, but,
Let me say this first:

"If I ever lose my faith in you,
(If I ever lose my faith in you)
There'd be nothing left for me to do
(There'd be nothing left for me to do.)
If I ever lose my faith,
If I ever lose my faith,
If I ever lose my faith in you...."

"Oh, Luka, that was," she shook he head and dashed tears from her
eyes. "Wonderful. The best gift ever! Thank you."

Aluka gave Ilyssia his most brilliant smile yet. "I'm glad ya like it
so much. Just don't tell Dyosha that or her feelin's might get hurt,"
he put in teasingly, and took one of his friend's hands, giving it a
companionable squeeze. "Happy birthin'day, Lys," he finished simply.

When he squeezed her hand, she took hold and pulled him forward
offering a quick hug from the side. "It was really special, something
completely you, that no one else could give. I even think Dyosha
would understand."

"Whoa, hey, watch the gitar," Aluka said, not really scolding as he
accepted the hug. The instrument was sturdy; it could take some
measure of abuse. "Well, that's good to hear. So how's it feel to be a
Turn older and that much closer to joinin' the wings?"

"The wings are still a ways away, but I find I don't mind that much.
I've Gwynnyth with me while I wait and I've given some thought to
apprenticeing as a Dragonhealer until I'm old enough to join a
fighting wing. You know, before coming to the Weyr I had dreaded this
day. It meant I was old enough to marry, but now it seems my life is
full of potential. Do you realize next sevenday I'll take my first
flight on Gwynnyth? Then I will truly be a dragonrider."

"Now that I know, I'll haveta see if I can ditch my chores and come
watch," Aluka said.

"For Faranth's sake, don't get yourself into any trouble! I am pretty
excited, though. Next month we'll get our own Weyr, too. I can't
wait!"

"I'll be fine even if I do get into trouble, I promise," Aluka told
her. There were so many milestones happening for Lys now, and fast; he
wanted to see what he could, be with her when they happened if
possible.

"You very well might be the best human friend I've ever had, Luka,"
she said with a smile and a shake of her head. Actually, in truth she
was quite certain that he was.

For some reason, the compliment flustered him, and Aluka blushed.
"You're one of the best friends I have too," he stated. "Thanks for
puttin' up with me," he added, giving Lys a light, friendly punch on
the shoulder.

She sighed dramatically. "It's a difficult job, but someone's gotta
do it," she quipped with a teasing smile.

Even that warmed his heart. Funny: It was Ilyssia's birthday, and yet
Aluka felt as though he had been given a gift.
