Description: Daihmin heads to the Vintner Hall to take a report on some trouble there.
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 12, day 12 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Karhal
It wasn't really what he'd joined the guard to do, after all. He was
more for the moonlight chases and all. All the same, paperwork had to
be done- and the wicked thing about it, was that if you avoided it, it
tended to multiply.
So he was slugging up the hill to the new hall, to meet- apparently-
the new vintner.
He'd at least better get a decent drink out of all of this!
Upon seeing the guard approach, Gautrek offered a relieved sigh. He
was anxious to have this matter behind him and get back to work. A
few drudges were cleaning up the last of the mess left from the
physical altercation between the two cot holders. Though he had
convinced the men to cease their fighting and adjourn to separate
rooms, they had left a chaotic mess in their wake.
"Thank you for coming," he greeted the tall blond guard. "I'm
Journeyman Gautrek."
Daihmin had to admit it, he blinked. People weren't usually that happy
to see his face around the door. But it only showed in a mild flash on
his face.
"My pleasure, Journeyman. My name is Daihmin, I work with Karhal on
the night watch, of course. You had some troubles earlier?"
Troubles looked to be a mild word. The drudges had done a good job,
but they had their work cut out.
"Indeed, we had two, apparently rival cot holders arrive, each with a
delivery of hops for the Hall. Both men had apparently stopped at the
tavern prior to coming to complete their business, which did not help
the ensuing argument. Each man wanted to know about the Hall's
contract with the other, which is strictly confidential of course.
Their argument progressed to a piece of disputed land which is when I
was called. I thought I had them calmed and in a reasonable state of
mind when an issue involving a relationship of one of the men with the
other's sister arose. There was then an all out physical brawl during
which they destroyed several bottles of wine as well as," Gautrek's
hand wave around the room, "Well you can see for yourself. I was able
to break it up and their minor injuries are now being treated in
separate rooms."
Daihmin was writing as the man spoke. His eyes and senses, however,
were equally busy. People held Gautrek to be an honest and trustable
man, but Daihmin never let that cloud his perceptions.
"If you make a detailed summary of what was damaged, Journeyman, it
will be seen to that you are recompensed."
And clever eyes were noting the remnants of broken glass, which would
be carefully compared to the statement they received. Daihmin
considered nobody free from temptation to deceit. His sister would
probably call him paranoid. She always had.
"Who was working here before you arrived?"
There seemed to be little sign of anyone else around.
"Junior Journeyman Shrion sustained a minor injury to his head when
the two barreled into him. He is lying down, but I can have someone
fetch him if you like. As for the damages, I will write up the list
myself. I made it very clear to both men that their cooperation would
be expected if they wanted to continue doing business with the Hall."
"No, that won't be necessary. One of my colleagues will speak to him later."
He nodded approval of the last sentiment. He liked men like this.
"Anyone else get involved in the fight?"
He'd started to walk through the room as he spoke, making the odd
note, although it all seemed very simple.
"Unless there's anything else bothering you, we can probably leave it
there. I do have some of my men waiting outside, so we will relieve
you of their burdensome presence very shortly."
"Well, since you're here there is one thing I would like to mention,"
the vintner's brow furrowed and his voice was hesitant. "We weren't
going to report anything because it's really so minor. One of the
storerooms was broken into last sevenday and a couple of items taken.
Just small foodstuffs, we actually thought it might be a wayward child
seeing what he could get up to. Then one of the women from the
laundry insisted some clothing had gone missing. Of course that does
happen now and again, just carelessness. The only reason that I bring
it up, is to make you aware, just in case the Hold has a similar
issue."
Daihmin paused in his scribbling. Something in that rang a bell, but
he couldn't quite place a finger on it.
"Noted, Journeyman. I'll compare it to some of our other reports when
I return. I appreciate the warning."
Satisfied otherwise that the incident had taken place as reported, he
nodded.
"I think that's all we need, otherwise. These two young men will
escort your 'friends' to appropriate quarters for them to sleep it off
and remember their manners. Thank you for your cooperation."
"Of course, but can I at least offer you a drink before you go?
Though the reason for your visit wasn't the most pleasant, I hate
sending you away without so much as a sip to quench your palate."
Daihmin actually flashed his smile at that.
"My dear man, you may offer me a drink at any time of the day you please!"
