"So how is your marriage coming, trader?" Parale knew the girl was young and she hoped everything had worked out for the better of both of them. Still, it could be hard making adjustments at first-even when there wasn't a large age gap. Ioven had proven that of course.
Taril paused on the path to the dockyards, both surprised by the question and that Parale had approached him in the first place. He turned to face the young mother with a slightly guarded smile, unsure of what she'd been hearing. "I am a lucky man to have been wed to Humari. And how are you faring, Parale?"
"Good then that things are doing well. Me? I have three girls and a working man to feed-a feat on most days. It all works out, though. Venrys is of a
turn now where she is a great help to me." For once, she wasn't carrying Parys. Ioven wasn't working so she was letting him spend time with the children alone while she did some shopping.
Taril nodded. "Venrys would be your eldest?" He had a vague memory of a quiet girl with brown hair, but it was so hard to keep track of all the
children running through the Hold.
"Aye, a smart one she is. Very proud of her. Syren is coming along too, but she's still young yet and lights up at everything. No focus." Of course that was youth and curiosity and Parale encouraged it, hoping as she grew, she might find something and stick with it.
"Some are like that." Taril shrugged. "My brother was. He settled down once my father started taking him out to sea with us, although that method is closed to Syren." Unfortunately.
"A good thing too-most of the seamen I've met stink." She wrinkled her nose at that. "She'll find something worth her while someday. Might be nursing or
something else." Parale thought she could be good as a fostermother even, with children herself.
Taril let the comment about 'stink' slide. "Are you thinking of fostering her elsewhere?"
"My girls....we don't have any rank or any of that to foster. No, they'll stay with me till they're old enough." Not unless Ioven made Master but by then Venrys would be old enough to marry anyway. She'd need Syren to help with Parys.
"Not even out to aunts or uncles?" Taril asked.
"My family is at Garnet Valley. Ioven's is at Falling Rock. I have no siblings. He does, but he left home when his first wife died so I doubt he'd send them there. He likes to keep them close. And I've only known them a few turns now so I don't think I'd send them away anyway." Parale shrugged. Boys fostered more than girls. She was aware the harper hall took females now but neither of her girls could sing and their father wouldn't encourage it anyhow.
"Fair enough." Taril wondered what Humari would say if he mentioned fostering; it was good for children, but could be hard on families. "I suppose you're all rather new here anyway, and perhaps not ready to move on just yet."
"I am but they've been here for awhile now. I don't see us moving unless he gets assigned somewhere else." Not that she particularly liked Sunstone. She'd rather be at home. Still, her family was here so she made the best of it.
"I don't see Bryvin letting Ioven go any time soon. We need a Smith," Taril said.
Of course Ioven wasn't a traditional smith though he was trained to do that sort of work if he had to. Most of the time he was working on the heating project. She didn't understand it all so she just nodded and said encouraging words. "Well you seem to be doing fine so I suppose she can cook. That's the most important part."
"Among other things." The merchant smiled. "This is my path; I doubt you are going all the way down to the docks...?"
"Not all the way. Just to the fishmongers. Hopefully I can work something out for dinner." She nodded as they parted ways.
