Description: An incredibly hungry Genna sits down next to N'call at dinner.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 19 of Turn 7
Genna stacked her plate almost aggressively, not paying much attention
to what she put on it, just that it was plenty. It'd been a long day
and she was all kinds of hungry. When she got to the end of the food
line, she turned on her heels and flopped down in the first empty seat
she came across. She grinned a bit sheepishly at the rider across from
her. "Mind if I sit here?"
"Not at all," he said. Bronzeriders were very aware of the political
advantages of furthering their acquaintance with goldriders. Even if
they were young and untried and their lifmate happened to have been
sired by his own.
The corner of his mouth lifted. "How are you and Lissath faring Genna?"
"Oh," Genna blushed when she suddenly realised just who she'd sat
across from. "We are doing well, Sir, thank you." She paused for a
moment, eyeing her food hungrily. "How are you and Haloth?"
"We're fine," he smiled. "Go ahead and eat. The stew is particularly
good tonight." He put a spoonful in his own mouth and chewed
thoughtfully. "Have you started your goldrider training with the
Weyrwoman yet?"
He needn't say that twice and soon Genna was shoving a spoonful of
stew into her mouth. Only after she chewed and swallowed, did she look
up again with a smile. "Not yet, it's on my schedule for later this
week. I'm dying of curiosity though, I wonder what they will start
with."
"Something to bore you to tears," N'call chucked. "My bronzerider
training started with hidework." He shrugged and shoveled some mashed
tubers into his mouth.
"Ah," Genna bit her lip unconsciously at the mention of hidework. She
wasn't exactly sure if she was ready for the Weyrwomen to find out
about her 'problem'. Then again, they had probably already heard from
some kind of report on the Weyrlings' progress. "Well, I'll make it
through, surely," she continued with a wink, trying to sound brave.
"Of course," he said. "It's not all bad." He looked at her plate. "You
need to eat more though. It'll help you with the cold if the heat goes
out again."
Genna looked from N'call to her plate and back again, puzzled for just
a second, before she realised he was joking. "My mother would have a
heart-attack if she saw me stack my food this high," she chuckled.
"Yet here people always tell you to eat even more. I really do belong
here!" she chuckled.
"It's a good feeling when you finally realize that isn't it," he said
with a grin. Sitting back and pushing his now empty plate away
slightly he looked seriously at Genna. She didn't seem to be the kind
of person Nina thought. At least not to him, but then he rode bronze
and their roles were different. "How's Lissath doing," he asked. "I've
been hearing good things."
"Oh just great," Genna said after swallowing a mouthful of tubers.
"She's getting more stubborn every day it seems, I never knew that was
possible," she paused for a moment as he mentioned hearing about
Lissath. "You have? I mean, I know we're doing alright with our
training, but I didn't realise people were actually talking about it."
It made her blush a little.
"Bronzerider," he grinned. "We tend to keep track of goldriders around
us. I'm rather certain most people pay attention to you far more than
you realize. It's always going to be that way. I know I had to get
used to it," he smiled down at his hand a moment. "Not sure I am
really."
"Hmm, not sure I ever will," Genna laughed. "Sometimes I feel like
it's just a matter of time, before I make a complete fool out of
myself." She did wonder if people talked about her visits with Nokala.
Maybe people were gossiping about her being illiterate or whatever
they had made of it.
"Yeah," he breathed ruefully. "Remember who you're talking to? The
silly bronzer who almost compromised a weyrlling a few weeks back. Big
mistake," he flared his fingers and eyes in a dramatic criticism of
his own behavior with Ninaine.
"Ah, right," Genna smiled ruefully. "Sorry, I temporarily forgot. I
guess that's a good sign for you, right? Maybe there's hope for us and
our reputations anyway."
"There's always hope," he chuckled. "Don't worry too much, sometimes
things work out." He thought back to his night with Ninaine with a
lift of his lips.
"I certainly hope so. At least Lissath seems to think it," Genna
smiled. "And I bet Haloth does too." At least they always had their
dragons believing in them.
"That he does," N'call grinned. "But they forget far sooner than our
two footed friends." He pushed his dishes at a passing drudge and
leaned back in his chair. "Well, if you'll excuse me," he slid his
chair back. "It has been a pleasure Genna."
"Likewise, N'call, I hope to talk to you again soon," Genna smiled upwards
as the bronzerider got to his feet.
