Tavia

Talwynn walked into the Infirmary, pleased by the fact that she wasn't
leaning on her cane. She'd wanted to make the trip by herself the whole
way, hoping it would provide evidence of what she wanted to ask. But there
was a bit of relief when she settled into the chairs, waiting to be seen
by the next available healer.

Once she'd wrapped up the packaged herbs where she'd been putting them
into their individual distribution sizes, she took them to the front
to put in the appropriate drawer. "Oh," she said when she saw Talwynn
sitting there. "I didn't hear you come in!" She smiled and motioned
her to follow her with her head. "Come on back."

Talwynn gave the other greenrider a grin and pushed herself to her feet.
"How's it been?" she asked as she followed along.

"I'm doing fine," she smiled. Physically at least and with the
friendships she'd been building at Dragonsfall it was beginning to
feel like home. "Kaiavin is growing like a weed."

"Oh, that's excellent. How'd you live with the power outage? Misrerable
event it was. Make you miss the Cove any?"

Tavia chucked. "Oh I miss the cove every time I go out in the snow.
But there's no help for that and I"m told the spring is beautiful. I
got through it alright," she nodded. 'U'kaiah got me ready, just in
case, before he left." Her eyes shifted for a moment as she churned at
the mention of the bronze rider but then she took a breath and smiled.
"So enough about me... what brings you here today?"

"It was awful for some of us. Did you have many complaining of joint
ache?" Talwynn asked curiously.

She settled onto the exam bed and continued. "I'm glad it's you actually -
another rider, I mean. I did some helping out during the outage - picked
up one of the assisting technicians, even carried some firewood. But -
don't tell," she added quickly.

A slow smile spread across Tavia's face. "I won't tell as long as you
don't injure yourself. Hows that?"

"Thank you," she said in relief. "I didn't injure anything too badly, I
was just sore from the cold and the stiffness. And some of those
technicians were heavy, what do they feed them at Jade Harbor?"

Casual words, distracting from the importance of her real thoughts.

"It was nice to feel useful again, like I was a real part of the Weyr's
functioning. So I was thinking, maybe you could give me a checkup and see
how fit to _actually_ fly I am. I mean I know I'm not there yet," she
added.

"I know you've been making progress," she nodded. "Where exactly are
you hurting," Tavia asked. "I could give you some liniment for any
aches and pains. But a good soak in the hottest bathing pool you can
stand wouldn't be a bad idea.

"The left arm and hand hurt the worst, probably over-stress. I'm
trying to be able to secure all my buckles and hold straps with both
again."

"Thats good Talwynn," Tavia's brows lifted. "Do you think a massage
would help?" Sometimes a warm massage could help loosen up cramped
muscles when they didn't want to let go on their own.

"I think it would," she said. "I appreciate you being willing to take
a look at me every now and then."

"Of course," Tavia smiled. She enjoyed helping people and that was
probably why she'd become a healer in the first place. "Why don't you
take off that top and I'll see when I can do to loosen you up."

"Yes'm," Talwynn said. It took her a short bit to struggle out of the top
- the stiffening muscles made it harder to pull over her head without some
unusual contortions on her end. "That'll have to get better before I'm on
the roster, I suppose."

"Yes a bit," she smiled. Meanwhile Tavia retrieved the fragrant oil
Vandor had taught her to make for just this purpose and set it into a
warming tray where a small flame would heat the vessel and thereby the
oil inside. "Lay down on your stomach and we'll see what we can do."

"Yes ma'am." Talwynn laid down as ordered and sighed as she adjusted
the way she lay to put less pressure. "I'm just so tired of feeling
like I don't really contribute," she muttered.

Tavia slathered the oil on the arm and her hands and began to work
through the muscles one by one feeling the knots and working them with
experienced fingers. "You've given almost everything to the Weyr
already Talwynn. You don't need to feel that way."

"I know that you're right in truth. It just feels like I did so much
before, and what have I done since being hurt?" She hadn't even flown
that long before being scarred.

"You've been getting well Talwynn," her fingers could feel the
unnatural knots in the other woman's muscles and tried to work at them
without causing pain. "We should go soak in a hot pool after this."
Tavia grunted.

Getting well...if a healer thought so, surely it was true. She might have
objected to any other rider's assessment, but just as she didn't want her
craft challenge, she wouldn't counter another. But how long could one
recover before it was time to either fly, or accept one's limitations?

"That sounds good to me." She sighed as she felt the muscles beginning to
relax. "Which do you like better, these chances to practice your craft or
flying against Thread?"

"I like them both," she said. "My father was a journeyman baker and
always encouraged me to craft. How about you?" she added after a
moment. "Do you have a craft?"

"Starsmith," Talwynn explained. "Helped me out during the star chart
lessons and the weather ones. I don't mind doing my own weather and fall
predictions for the Weyr either - to keep in pactice." She'd never dared
to submit them to anyone else.

"Oh that sounds very exciting. Why don't you continue with your
studies. A rider with your experience could be a great deal of help to
a Wingleader even if you can't fly 'fall."

That gave Talwynn something to smile about. She'd been so busy
learning how to do the most basic tasks again that she hadn't thought
about actually applying them. She'd just got caught up in self-pity.
Someone else telling her she had value was something new. "I hadn't
thought about that before. Thanks, Tavia."

"Sure," she said and slapped Talwynn on the ass lightly. "Now let's go
soak. I'm done for the day."
