Stories/Mentors/Adopting

Hi, I am brand new.  Before joining I explored the site for days, but even now I can't find the stories.  I hope this is not utterly stupid of me

I want to adopt/create some characters and get to writing ASAP, but want to read up on some storylines first.  Never having PBEM'd before, I have lots of questions.  

Can I get a mentor before I have a character?  I have looked at the adoptables and am interested in several, but wouldn't mind disussing a few things before I jump in and apply for adoption.

Hello, Melissa!

Anyone can have a mentor - even a lurker - if they request one.  Although I'll promise you that asking a question here will generally land you what seems like a dozen "mentors" willing to tell you how things work.

Right now we're waiting on our email to come back "online" from the server move, at which time you'll be able to sign up for the mailing list.  On the Triad list, generally we have 5-10 emails per day (complete stories).  We're a full-post club, so all of our roleplaying is done privately (two or more members email their RP back and forth privately and then post the final story to the main list).  

We can't archive stories where they are readable online because of rules regulating Pern fandom (it's an Anne McCaffrey rule).  If you use Eudora (or are computer-savvy enough to convert Eudora files to Outlook), full-members can have access to the members only area where we store zipped Eudora files.  They can be downloaded, unzipped, and placed in your Eudora program's folder, which makes the emails appear as if you'd received them on the mailing list.  (and yes, members, I'll get those updated as soon as we get all the bugs out of the new website design).  But that's as close as we come to "archives".

You're welcome to join in any discussion here on the forums (which is where a lot of plotting gets done sometimes), and ask as many questions as you like.  In fact, it's newcomers who are VERY important right now as we bring the new website from development to live status, as you can tell us about what's confusing and what questions aren't being answered easily.  Oldtimers (established members) sometimes overlook such things because they already know whatever info may or may not be in the FAQs.

I am really glad to know that it wasn't just me.  I did subscribe yesterday, but due to the new website/email difficulties of course got nothing in my inbox.  Took me awhile to figure this out.

I am very anxious to start posting and finding coposters, but did not want to go too far before I had read some stories.   I definitely want to apply for a mentor, so my understanding is that I can use the email listed under mentors at the triad site.  Is this correct and would this email be functioning right now?

Should I go ahead and apply for adoption of a character before getting a mentor?  I realize than gaining acceptance could take at least a week?  

As I said I have many questions.  I can just start asking them in this forum, but don't won't to overuse/overunn this forum.  At this point, if I do post more  questions here am I correct in assuming it would be best to start a "new topic" and deal with each question individually?

This is true. Sometimes the "mentors" are even about to post their response when someone gets in before them. :P

Oh well. I did get in before Trilby, which is quite a feat...

Ask all the questions you want here, Melissa.  Our poor Inquiries forum is rather bare and could use some activity!  Individual posts does help a bit - makes it easier for newbies after you to find answers.

One good way to get a "feel" for current storylines is to read the Tribune section for the newsletters.  Each L1 contributes the current storylines to that forum.  Not the same as reading stories, but at least a taste.

I think most of our mentor staff is waiting on email to fix itself, and the mentor group email won't work until then.  However, emails to us at our non-triad addresses would be fine.

You can apply for adoption, although right now... guess what?  That email's down!  *grins*  Adoption is usually easier b/c the PA Team doesn't have to review a sheet for canon - it's already good.

However, email me privately and let me know who you're interested in and we can get that fixed up, with one important question...     You are 15 or older?

I love to write and haven't been able to indulge in awhile so, eventually, I may just take ALL of you up on your offers.  Right now I'm working on just getting started.  

I originally focused my attention on the Weyr, but everyone's enthusiasm for the holds/crafts has me reviewing each one.  EEESH! You guys are making it harder to decide instead of easier!  But that's okay -  it's good for a mind to be challenged, although with my mind that doesn't necessarily take much.  :puzzled:

Well, all the Weyrs need folks... and mikel-brat forgot to plug his OTHER area...

He's also the Weyrleader for Dolphin Cove.

DCW is going to have a hatching very soon, DFW the next with eggs, IF candidates are your cup of tea.

All three Weyrs need riders of all color dragons and staff of all shapes, sizes, ranks, and crafts.

The main thing is to pick your favorite and let us fight over you once you pick your corner *g*.  After all... I think everyone pouncing has personas in just about every location, and those who don't have them make up NPCs just to copost!

But other than my shamelessly biased plug (stolen from Mikel while his back was turned) Triad is a good club no matter where your prospective adoptive character is. There's plenty of action all over!

And I will calmly request that you come and visit the Printer Hall at Topaz Sea Hold. The Hallmaster is a real softy and would love some new blood to liven the place up.

And the Hallmaster at the Tanner Hall a sweet heart. No he is misleading you. The poor Hallsecond there is under so much stress that he is being forced to take a leave of absence to the Vintner Hall.

Oh, no you would be much more comfortable at the Printer Hall.
