What Makes a Character Interesting To You?

The question is in the title, I was just wondering what makes a character stick in your mind, what provokes you to read their stories, etc.

For me, I like when characters have ups and downs. It's boring to read someone who only good things happen to, and it's depressing when all that happens to a character is negative. I especially like it when a character triumphs over the bad things that happens to them, and grows as a result.

I'm also a sucker for "short but sweet" posts that are cute and funny.

What about you guys?

Great question!!

I like it when a character seems 'real' to me. I like to be able to picture the character, see what they are doing, and even hear their thoughts a bit, enough to intrigue me and make me want to know more about them!

I also like it when character's stories often carry on...from one post to another, makes me feel like I'm coming back to an old friend and getting to know them again.

Truth be told, I love reading some of our 'bad guys and girls' as these are characters I don't often write myself...so I love to see what other people do with such characters!

Honestly, the ones that really seem normal. If they're going to through real problems that someone in their life would have and are reacting to them, I'm going to believe them. Of course fun plots also attract me.

Complexity. The more different "sides" persona has, the more interesting he/she is. I mean, no one is all good or all bad. The more life-like, "real" the sonas is the better.

All of the above.  It's tiring if a character is only really good or only REALLY bad...and if they are I want honest and real reasons as to why they are that way.  And if a character is sort of bad, I want to see some growth and some movement through their issues/problems.  And really really god characters just turn into Pollyanna to me!  So I want real characters dealing logically in a sort of unreal environment, if that makes any sense.  :cyclopsani:

I second Ames'! GREAT question :)

I want a character that leaps off the page to me and no matter what happens, good or bad, I don't want to miss a word of their life.   Someone who I can personally identify with and understand .. real, I guess ... and someone who makes me laugh too :)

I like characters that start in the middle.  They have a past that they can slowly share over time, and little details of their life bubble to the surface from time to time.  They also have a future that is uncertain, often with problems, but they sometimes grow, sometimes fail, because of those obstacles.  And I like it when their stories stretch out over a long time and they don't get what they want all at once.  They have to work for it, and then sometimes what they THOUGHT they wanted, wasn't actually the best thing for them...

Oh, and I like bad guys.  I like the ones who are bad but don't realize it, and I like the ones who are bad and embrace it  :angel12:
