Candidate Rider Relationships

Here's a question that may have been answered many moons ago.

If a rider is involved in a relationship with a candidate could said candidate move into the rider's weyr until Impressing? Or would that be frowned upon and strickly forbidden?

 Either one would work but we would just like to remain in canon.

Where do candidates live?

Most candidates live in the candidate barracks, separated on either side of the huge building, with only a curtain for privacy between the genders. The exceptions to this would be candidates who are journeyman crafters upon Search or who have families/weyrmates by the time they are Searched. See each Weyr's Location Guide for the exact setup for barracks and journeyman candidates.

Just on an aside, though, on same subject (sort of)... Are Candidate-Rider relationships frowned on in Triad or not? Is it a sort of "fraternizing with superiors" concept? I recall a section of a book--either "All the Weyrs" or "Skies" or in that area--during a Hatching.

 Lessa is mentally reviewing the Queen candidates,and there's one that has already been in several bronzerider's weyrs.  Lessa's view, as far as I saw it, was "Oh, well, that's good. She's flexible and has taken to some bronzeriders, so it's good if she Impresses."

 Do we share the same POV, or is it strictly professional-- Rider to Candidate?

Never written into any FAQ (but probably should be *makes another note*)...

But...

A candidate can have a relationship with a non-ranking rider without any real worry of crossing any lines.  Weyrmate situations are not terribly uncommon, since candidacy can last many turns (12-20 is our general age range) with no guarantee of Impression.

If a candidate has a weyrmate, and Impresses, he/she will live separated from his/her weyrmate until senior weyrlinghood.  Even when the dragon is old enough to fly (and therefore needs its own weyr and not the barracks), the dragon isn't yet old enough to understand sexual activities by the rider.  So until the dragon learns to /between/ (our designation for senior weyrlinghood and almost-mature dragon), weyrmates have to stay apart.

This situation is fairly common, and has been explored in a few storylines at Triad.

When a ranking rider is involved, things get sticky.  After all, a fifteen turn old candidate sleeping with the Weyrleader is a bit awkward, disciplinary wise.

A former WLM2nd at RBW was shipped out on disciplinary issues after he crossed the line with a young green weyrling he'd had a prior-to-Impression relationship with (this was an approved storyline, explored with much care by both authors prior to one leaving the club and using it for the WLM2nd's exit).

A candidate with any ranking rider (such as wingseconds, wingleaders, weyrlingmasters, etc) would be highly discouraged, and should be discussed with the Local Level One to know you've considered all angles of a potentially complex storyline.  

Bronzeriders, for the purpose of relationships, are considered non-ranking as long as they hold *no* other wingrank (wingleader, 'second, wlm, etc).

After all, no sense telling a seventeen turn old bronzeboy barely out of weyrlinghood he can't have a candidate sweetheart of his own age.

So yes, with a non-ranking rider, a candidate could move into his/her weyr, and not actually need formal permission to do so.
