if it's winter would that sea be iced over? and if not would there be any kind of ferry system, or would you just have to bother some random boat owner?

You know, on the freezing bit, Stevie, I'm not sure.

Parts of the Sea are down below the 50 degree line in latitude, and the climate for DFW's area was originally based on Oslo, Norway.  A quick google search tells me that the sea in that area *does* freeze in winter (Um, Paula, HELP????).  I've compared this area of the Azov to the White Sea area on Earth in my past notes.

Icebreakers (my initial research) are more of a "steel" ship invention, so I don't know.  I'm still learning ship info as we go with the pirate SL, as this hasn't ever been one of my areas of interest in the past.

However... the northern parts of the Sea would not be frozen, and certainly not the whole thing, as the Sea is 1500 miles across at the central widest point (east-west).  Those parts are in climates similar to the Caspian Sea region of Earth.

Without ice, no, the Sea is too large for a ferry system, and any craft beyond coastal fishing craft for a Hold or seahold would be the larger sort.

ok so there should be ice, and the ships they have wouldn't be build to withstand plowing through that. I was thinking more of coast hoping Sasima to OCH, but seeing as thier farther south, it would probably be mostly ice, especially near teh shallower waters witht he coast.

to my knowlege the ships that break through the ice do it by going over the ice and crushing it down and out of the way as they go....I saw a show or something on it...anyway I'm still not sure if ships not made of steel or what ever could do that as well....anyway it was just a question :)

I saw the same show, Stevie (I believe), and remember being struck by the same thing, that the Ice Breakers rose up on the ice and crushed it by sheer weight.

I looked today briefly and could find nothing on-line about wooden Ice Breakers, and it is my gut feeling that a wooden hull would not have the strength to stand up to the pressure.

you probably did. :) So I'll just assume that Sasima would be pritty well stuck until either the snow melts of the sea does.

Paula

The souther coast would be iced, and then there's the think called pack-ice that can drift to north or form icebergs. The middle of the sea and the northern coast would be open. Sailing over sea of Azov would be possible, (avoiding the southern parts) but hazardous (see Titanic).

new question with it frozen near ACH would a boat even venture farther north and theres that river kind of connecting that ocean and the sea.............

if I wanted to get Sasima from ACH to .... JHH or something would that be possible int eh winter weather

(and  if all this is possible anyone care to plot along with me :D )

well it looks like no one likes that idea either. I give up on ideas...
