A couple of canonesque (maybe?) questions

Hey y'all!

Have some questions.

1. Does Thread ever fall at night?  If not, why do they have night drills?

2. If there is a dispute between two minor/cotholders beneath a Lord Holder and one doesn't comply with what the Lord Holder decrees, what sort of things can the Lord Holder do?  Can he take away the hold from the family and give it to someone else?  Are there other actions that might be taken before that?

Eimi

1) Yes, there can be night falls, though I think it depends on the conditions (upper atmosphere conditions are much colder at night and therefore Thread may have a tendency to freeze during certain parts of the turn).
We have had night drills before, though it was a long time ago.  We had them as a special event, I remember.  I just remember a conversation between D'wrayt and U'kaiah about painting ropes white...
If you would like to schedule a night Fall some time, please let the Council know and we can make sure to specifically make that happen.

2) I think it would depend on the Lord Holder.  The Holder can be removed, but I think that would be the last straw.  I'm sure fines, threats, sanctions would be acceptable.  Stopping trade to those Holds until they comply, that sort of thing...  I think making sure that they remember that their sons inheriting the Hold on them may be in jeopardy if they don't do as the Lord Holder commands...

1. I was just wondering because the weyrlings did night drills. :}

2.  Thanks for the ideas!  I knew there had to be some other things that could be done that weren't quite so drastic, but my brain just refused to come up with any.  I appreciate it!

Could we get the Threadfall generator changed then, so it includes Threadfalls during the hours of darkness as a random part of life and not a 'special event'?

I had assumed Triad canon didn't have night Threadfall because the generator is set to only start Threadfall between 6am and 5pm.

Well, I'm not sure how often it would happen because of those conditions....if we added it to the times it would happen fairly often most likely.

Changing the times though would have to be done in the code of the website itself, so I'm not sure how easy or hard that is?  I'll forward it on and see.

For now and until we find out about the times, if a night fall is wanted for posting fun, we could schedule one because we'd have to overrule the "normal" time for that date.

Maybe that'd be a fun event to stir posting at a Weyr :)

Dragons must fly/when Thread is in the sky.

I'm not so sure why it would *be* an event if it was just normal everyday (night!) stuff.  Unless you mean people would want to write it because they haven't written it before.  And I'm not sure why the Triad website would have been set up to only generate Thread during the day if canon said it fell both day and night.

Thanks for passing it on, anyway, Clancey.

It's complicated, Jane, because you also have to take into account climate and season.  There is no one code that would fit all of the locations we have.  It would be more likely to happen in Dolphin Cove than in Dragonsfall.  It would be more likely to happen in summer than in winter.  It isn't a common occurrence, and the conditions would have to be just right.

It is easier to keep it a special event, and therefore, while we might pass it on to see how hard it is to change, considering all the other things we have been asked to rework on the website, realistically, I have a feeling it will have to say that way for the time being.  So, if you want to have such an event, please let us know and we will make a special event for you.

Since night falls were introduced by Todd, if we just don't count them as canon then we don't have to worry about it.  :)  They could have night drills to prepare riders for Threadfall in foggy or hazy conditions perhaps, or just so that they feel confident with their dragons flying at night since they do sweepriding and transports and stuff in the dark.
