Can Anyone Prove Elvis Died of a Doughnut Overdoes?

I kid you not, I have a 500-yen ($5) bet going on with one my Japanese co-workers that Elvis did NOT die from eating too many doughnuts.

Apparently it is a widely held belief in Japan that this was the true cause of Elvis' death.  When my friend said that I just blinked at him for a few seconds before saying, "Seriously?  How in the heck can you die from eating doughnuts?"

"I'm not sure," he replied, "but everyone knows it."

I blinked a few more times.  "Dude, he died from a drug overdose."

"What?" he asked, genuinely shocked.  "Why would you say that?"

"Because he was a drug addict.  He died from taking too many drugs.  In America, everyone knows THAT."

"No no," he said, shaking his head and smiling as if I were horribly misinformed.  "Elvis was a hero.  He couldn't have died from taking too many drugs."

So I bet him 500 yen that Elvis died from a cause of death unrelated to the consumption of eating too many doughnuts.  We jumped online and found several documents talking about how he died from an overdose, from a heart damaged from long-term drug use... No mention of doughnuts anywhere.  But my friend is determined!  I gave him until tomorrow to find a scientific document that links Elvis' death to the eating of doughtnuts.  So out of curiosity, has anyone else ever heard of this death by doughtnut theory?  I'm sure my friend could use the support ;)

And as a side note, after leaving him and walking back to my desk, I related this story to the girls around me and asked "How did Elvis die?"  and they all thought about it for a while and couldn't remember, and then I asked, "Have you ever heard that he died from eating too many doughtnuts?" and their faces brightened up and said "Oh yeah!  That's it!"  So apparently, this is something every Japanese person really does know....

I have NEVER heard that story before. Elvis dying from eating too many doughnuts. Too funny.

I've always heard the he had been overdosing himself on drugs - prescription and illegal since he was in the Army. I think he was found on his bathroom floor (maybe collapsed while on the toilet).

Whether or not it's true, it seems a good story to show that even though he seemed like a good guy - being the "King" and all - not everything is what it seems.

That guy had too many issues to list.

*Sigh* Though, he knew how to make the girls swarm. :D

Then again, I guess its right up there with people thinking Cass Elliot (Mama Cass) died from choking on a ham sandwhich...  She actually died of a heart attack, but there was a half eaten sandwhich on her bedside so the story got started...  I wonder if they found a box of doughnuts in Elvis' room....

Dana

lol  *g*  Maybe they did.....

I don't remember - all I know about august that year is that it was rudely interrupted by the arrival of my brother on the 10th.  So a tiny screaming baby feature really heavily in my memories from that time - and no nothing has changed except the screaming baby is now a screaming man!

Whoa, I've never heard that.  Totally weird.

I theory you could die of doughnut overdose, they aren't exactly health food. The doctors would call it heart attack though.

Yeah, I did find that the king did have a love for doughnuts... But I couldn't find anything that said it was was his passion for pastries that did him in...
