The Price of Fruit...

Ok, I just paid $1.50 for one normal sized Sunkist orange (normal size as in the size of a baseball or slightly bigger than a tennis ball).  For some reason, I have the impression that an orange is a little cheaper in the states...  Does anyone know how much an orange costs?

I think they were four for £1 in the shops here yesterday.  £1=$1.97

Well, a quarter slice of a watermelon is about $10 here.  Which I think is rediculus considering I could get a 10 pound watermelon for $2 in the states XD

Depends on the day.  This week at a farmer's market semi close to us, they are 2lbs for a buck.

Are you allergic?  I have a friend who is allergic.  Even the smell bothers her - gives her migraines.  It's the ONLY time she ever gets migraines, if she smells oranges, or grapefruit!  She's allergic to them as well!

Kastaka, that's what happens to my friend when she eats them.  Sounds like an allergy to me!

Well, I had a friend whose stomach just couldn't handle the citrus acid, so it made her tummy unhappy when she ate them.  It could be that too...

But having a migrane from the SMELL of an orange?  Wow.  Sounds like her body has a serious learned response and taste aversion!

Not necessarily.
My son lives in Florida, Orange County. He complains that he can buy oranges more cheaply here than there.

As to prices for me -- in regular supermarkets, prices are going up. In the international market, prices are still fairly low.

Oh, Eimi! I can't even imagine living without watermelon and oranges! I go through a watermelon every day during the summer. They're REALLY cheap here because of all of the Amish and Mennonites; one produce stand near my house has a hay wagon full of melons that they couldn't sell during any given week. I bet I could buy two and ship them to Japan for less than it would cost you to buy half of one. :(

They're even cheaper if you go directly to the farms. I had several different Amish ladies I'd buy from each summer -- one for tomatoes, her DIL for peppers, still another for cantaloupe. Not to mention the bakeries!

I think oranges are about 2-3 for $1.00 depending on variety.  Tomatoes are what's killing me around here, it's about $1.99 a lb for the yucky looking ones or $2.99 lb for the hot house variety.  I can't wait until summer when I can get them from the farmers market!

Good job I don't like tomatoes then.  Well, let me clarify that, I don't like them not cooked into anything, so pizza, ketchup, soups, sauces aree okay - they don't have the seeds then.

It's potatoes that are expensive at the moment - we're at that in between phase between new and old potatoes, so the big bakers I like to buy get expensive.
