Who likes the newer books?

Okay, I understand that the newer Pern books by Anne and those by Todd are not in the same class as Dragonflight through ATWOP, I agree with everyone, those were written in AM's prime and most were award winners for a reason.  But I've been seeing alot of bashing on other forums (and alittle bit here too) about how horrible the newer AM books and all of Todd's books are.  I like them.  They are fun reads.  Are they my favorites? No, but I enjoy them enough to keep them and read them again from time to time.  I especially like Todd's YA line about young Kindan and the mines.  Does anyone else like the non-core Pern books?

I haven't been able to read the later books yet.  I still need to get back into the books.  I do, however, have a very good friend who likes them.  She agrees with you, they aren't as good as the older ones, but she does like the newer ones as well.

For me it wasn't even just the writing.  I hate it when I pay $25 for a hardcover book and find it full of editing mistakes.  I don't care how good someone is, everyone needs an editor.

So I bought Pegasus in Space, then I bought Skies of Pern, and that was about $40 on books that seemed riddled with errors.  And all questions of prose aside... (because that's not this topic) it made it impossible for me to keep reading.

I tried.  I wanted to love them...just didn't work.  Though sometimes I wonder if all of the books are mostly the same and I just don't like the ones I've read for the first time as an adult as much as I like the ones I read as a teenager.

Editing mistakes bother me too, it doesn't matter _what_ book I'm reading. :D

I haven't liked any of the newer books, pretty much after Moreta/Nerilka, really.  Pern went off in a direction I didn't enjoy - holdless, renegades, rape, etc.  (The exception is The Dolphins' Bell, which is a wonderful story and possibly one of the best things she wrote!)

The one I absolutely hate with a passion, though, is Masterharper.  If I could burn out of my brain the memory of having read it, I would.  It's the Forest Gump of Pern, Anne going back and shoving Robinton in places he never was and in my opinion (though all of this is obviously only my opinion) he comes across as a sleezy old man in MHoP which makes me feel differently about his relationship with Menolly in Dragonsong/Dragonsinger/The White Dragon.  Yuck, yuck, yuck.

So, after the debacle of reading MHoP and having it ruin parts of earlier (and much-loved) books for me, I stopped reading any 'newer' books, Todd's included.

To be honest, I don't like Todd's version of Pern.  It's just not the same.  I gave Dragons Kin a shot and couldn't complete it, and then I gave Dragonsblood a shot, finished it, but found the story too far-fetched.  He contradicts his mother in many of the Pernese facts, which really bothers me...not to mention that his characters aren't as developed as they could be.  Maybe he should try writing his own world....

But that's just my opinion

Actually, Anne contradicts herself quite often. After all, originally Lessa due to being "of the Blood" had some weird mystical control over other creatures.

I haven't red the new books since "the Skies of Pern" so I can't say anything about them. But I've red the short stories in Anthologies Legends I and II. I liked the Runner-story. The one "Beyond Between" was eerie, beautiful ghost-story, but it wasn't Pern! Set in a Pern, it didn't make any sense. Set in any other place however...

I did not enjoy any of the books after Renegades. As I said when I first read Dolphins of Pern, I did not like it... I liked the cover  :D

I actually like Master Harper of Pern though, because it gave the sad story of Robinton, and it answered a lot of my questions about his past, and it made him seem more human than the rest of the characters in the series.

As for Todds books... I don't like his writing style, the errors in the book baffle me, and I felt like he was taking the same concept of his mother's story and reusing it into his own stories. I mean Dragonsblood? We've already read about outbreaks. That's what Moreta was all about.

And then there was the whole thing with Lorena sending her flits away and they go /between/ times to Impress some one else? Watch whers re-Impress when the person they originally Impressed is still alive? And what ever happened to that green watch wher from Dragons Kin, because in the second book that blind girl has a gold watch wher. Also his stories aren't really important to me. It's like I really don't care about characters or what happens to them.

I have not bought a single Pern book sense Dragons Blood, and I never finished Dragons Blood. At least the cover was pretty...

Unfortunately, sometimes it seems like people are so anxious to get a famous author's books out that editing gets skimped on.  And when I start finding a mistake or two on every page...I don't care HOW good the writing is (though it rarely is still that good with no editors paying attention) I just don't want to read it anymore.
