Loosing your Star Wars Virginity

Ok, this came to mind since Amanda and Jane were talking about chronological order in the other thread...


My friend Jack and I met a true Star Wars virgin.  As in she had NEVER seen ANY of the Star Wars movies!  (Don't ask how on earth that happened, she's a semi-mythical creature, I'm sure).  Anyway, we told her she needed to see the series, but we couldn't agree how to do it.

Jack said she ought to see it in this order: I, II, III, IV, V, VI
His reasoning of course was that it was chronological.

I said she ought to see it in the order they were released: IV, V, VI, I, II, III
My reasoning was that I thought she should see the good ones first, fall in love with the characters and the world and then ruin all her illusions by watching the first three, just like the rest of us did.  Besides, if you didn't know the true heart of the story, why would you care how you got there?  And seeing the first three movies would totally ruin the surprise of that whole moment - "Luke, I am your father", and also the fact that Leia was his sister.

So who in this case would be right?

I've always like published order, just the with AM's books.  By watching 1-3 second, you better understand the foreshadowing and the importance of the moments.  If you see 1-3 first, you won't understand the significance of passing mentions of Alderan or the Hutts, or anything like that.

Although I'm a staunch series chick, I do agree that published order is best for reading.

In fact, I tend to be very, very wary of reading stuff written later to fit in between or before existing stories.

Oh we did!  But he and I debated it so long I think we put her off Star Wars forever XD  So now I'm just which one you would have recommended.  Or if there's another order you would have recommended.

Personally, I would have chosen the order they were released, mainly because the earlier releases were of a higher quality than the more recent ones.

I've only seen the first movie, back when it first came out.  I must have been ... 12?  Something like that.  I can remember getting separated from my parents and brother in the crowd at the picture theatre because the ticket attendant thought I ought not to have been on a kids ticket.

I popped some one's Star Wars cherry about a month ago, and she did not like it at first, but then she really liked it and watch Episode V a few weeks ago.

It is weird when he meet some one who has not seen Star Wars, especially when they are dating a Star Wars geek.

Ok, this will definitely show my age, but I watched them in the order in which they were released -- starting with Episode IV on the night that it was released. We had no idea what we were going to see, but stood in line anyhow and were wowed by it all. Until that time, sci-fi had been Star Trek tv shows.

When Episode I was released, my son had just moved to Florida. He called to tell me that he was going to the midnight premiere, figuring that he had to go since he had also been at the Episode IV premiere (I was pregnant for the first one).

At any rate, in order of release is my vote.

OT is Original Trilogy, like Bree said. Pretty much, like Emma, I vote for Eps IV-VI and then nothing from I-III at all.

My new roommate is also a Star Wars virgin, I'm trying to figure out how to show her it prior to us moving out, given that finals are in 3 weeks (oh noes!)
