This morning, I woke up around 9:30am and Brad called, he's in TX for a few weeks. As I normally do, I let the two puppies, Cadence and Alaska, out of their crate in the bedroom and raced them to the back door and let them out.

Usually, my husky, King, my baby, is waiting for me, bouncing at the end of his chain and howling at me. He always greets me this way and I've always loved it.

Today, he didn't. I thought, maybe he's just sleeping, it was quite early for him. I called his name a few more times and nothing. I went to shake him, and he was cold. I screamed. Yelled at him to get up and talk to me. I was so scared and so angry. I called my fiance and he told me to put a blanket on him and unhook him from the chain. I put his favorite blanket on him and had such a hard time getting the chain from underneath him without crying.

My fiance called around to the vets around here to see what we could do. We can't bury him, because it isn't our land - so, we're having him cremated. He called his two friends Jason and Tom and they put him in the back of the truck with his blanket. My friend Amanda came over, cause I needed someone else here with me. We took King to Fur, Fin and Feather, a local pet store that will do the cremation. They'll put his ashes in a little wooden box and engrave his name and death date on it. I was filling out the papers for it and couldn't stop crying.

King died sometime last night or this morning. And at first I thought he had choked himself to death, but he looked like he was sleeping and I hope and pray that he just fell asleep.

King never showed any sign of old age and was very healthy. He was my baby. I got King when I was in the 7th grade and he's my best friend. He was about 8 or 9, but because he is part wolf, we assumed he would live much longer.

I spent most of the day away from the house, knowing I wouldn't be able to handle being there and I was right. I got home a few minutes ago and King always howls at me when I pull up and it was silent. It's just his chain lying there.

He was the kind of dog that everyone loved and he loved people. He insisted on following me everywhere and if you told him something, he'd argue in his low growl/howl that I loved so much. King was supposed to live forever and I never expected this. I expected my children to know him and love him as much as I do.

But, he is a better place now and he lived a long and happy life. And, I will always love him and never forget him. He gave me a reason to wake up in the morning, when things were too tough for me. He was stronghold on life and King will always be in my heart.

So sorry to hear this, Kate.  I'm sure all you want to do right now is wind back the clock until he was still alive and somehow make it not happen.  It's such a horrible feeling to be just on this side of a tragedy like this and not be able to *fix* things.

He was a spectacular looking dog and I bet people just fell in love with him.

I think we've all probably had a pet who was special to us, and we can understand how you feel.  Mine was a cat named Midnight.

I'm sure King knew he was as lucky to have you as you were to have him.

I am so sorry your lovely King has gone.

Losing a pet is always hard, but losing one you've had for so long, harder still.

Having lost beloved pets over the years, I can empathize.

What a beautiful dog. I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost him... it's so hard to lose animals that you love, and that love you. They're irreplaceable. :(

*hugs*

What a fantastic looking dog! Losing a pet is terrible, and I'm so sorry you had to go through this, especially when it's thoroughly unexpected. *hug*

Thank you so much everyone. It's been a hard day and I know tomorrow won't be much easier. But, with time, it won't hurt so bad. Right now, day to day things are difficult without him at my side and and empty spot on the couch - where he always slept.

But, I'm doing better and my puppies, Cadence and Alaska are helping tremendously. Thanks for all the kind words. You have idea how much it helps.

I just think that he's chasing rabbits in huge fields now... right where he should be.

I'm sorry to hear that, Kate. I know how hard it is to lost a loved pet.

I'm so sorry to hear that Kate.  When my dog died I cried and cried.  She was only four and it was so sad.  My mom and I held her until she was dead.  Its hard I know.  My other dog died about two weeks after her.  He was 15.  I'm sorry Kings gone, but you still have two dogs that need your love and attention.   And things will get better.  I've got another dog who I love SO much and even though I loved my other dogs, Merle is my here and now.
