Teseada
Teseada

Teseada sat back in her chair, letting the words just wash over her. So many times before this lecture had been given, and so many times she had heard it. Leaning back, she felt her eyes begin to close...

"...And..." E'naer noticed the candidate starting to nod off middle of his lecture of caring a hatchling. "...dragonrider must remind alert all time. To answer the needs of his or her lifemate and to learn everything she can from taking care of a hatchling." He changed his regular speech on a spur of a moment and walked next to the girl. "Boring you, miss Teseada?" The weyrlingmaster's third asked sarcastically. Everyones eyes were now drawn to her.

"Sir?" The girl sat bolt upright in her seat.

"This is a important lesson. Could you at least pretend you're listening?" E'naer scolded.

"I was listening," she said defensively. "You were talking about the hatching Sir."

"And how to take care of your hatchling after it. So, if you were listening, tell me, what should you do if your dragonet suddenly starts to gag and choke when she's eating?"

"Ummm...." she muttered as she thought quickly. "Call for help?"

E'naer sighed inwardly. "That too and..." he launced into a detailed explanation of how to remove piece of food from a dragonet's throat. He was a dragonhealer after all.

Teseada tried to look interested, but having heard such things so many times before it was hard to maintain that level after the first couple of times she had been standing. She was sure by now that the rest of the class were listening, and looking. No doubt something would be said later on, and there may be punishment chores given, she was sure of that much.

E'naer was still relatively new as a weyrlingmaster's third and didn't really know how to deal with the situation. Teseada's lack of interest was obvious to him. He scowled at her. Looking around, he asked:" There's the one thing I keep
repeating in these cases, what is it?" Several eager hands went up and the greenrider pointed one randomly. "Don't let it happen! Prevention is the best cure," the candidate said. "Correct" E'naer nodded approvingly.

Hopefully the change in focus of attention meant that she was off the hook, for now at least. All she had to do was manage to try and look interested, or at least as though she was listening.

"And we're going to have a little private discussion after the class is over" E'naer said with a low voice to Taseada before moving on continuing with his normal lesson.

She gulped. "Yessir," she muttered.

E'naer waited untill rest of the class had left before calling Tasaeda to his desk.

"You wanted to talk to me sir?" she said, watching the others file out to go to their noon meal.

"Yes. I've noticed you seem to have a little attitude problem. I know you've heard these classes before, but you still should pay attention. You could always learn something new. Have you somehow surrendered? Resigned to not to impress?"

She looked down, not wanting to meet his eyes. "I just don't think it'll happen now," she muttered.

"Negative thinking doesn't help" E'naer chided gently.

"I'd have impressed by now if I was going to, I've been standing since I was old enough to do so," she said, her voice a little whiny.

"How old were you?" E'naer asked. With so many candidates, it was hard to remember details.

"I'm seventeen now sir, I've been doing this for five turns."

"Seventeen. That means you have three to four turns left to stand. You're barely over the halfway mark of you Candidate career. No time to give up yet" E'naer said. "If you were nineteen I would understand your concern." He stopped for a moment to consider the situation. He hated punishing people and she really hadn't done anything serious. Just been inattentive during a class. "Consider this a warning. No, off you go. It's a lunch time," he said with the most stern voice he could manage.

"Thank you sir," she said, dashing off in the direction of the dining caverns. Maybe she could consider herself lucky, this time.
