Description: Meledei greets the new goldrider
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 6
One of her first items on her agenda was to 'meet and greet' the other
goldriders once she had a little bit of time to settle in. She wasn't
by any means what she would consider unpacked. There were still crates
of bottles on the floor until she could find the storage space for her
projects. She pulled out nice bottle of her best Citronello and some
very small glasses and set them on the table.
The dessert liquor was one of her favorites. She'd requested some
finger foods from the kitchen and the drudge had delivered them just a
few moments before.
Now she was unpacking more of her bedding. First a quilt the ladies in
the lower caverns had made for her lay displayed on the foot of her bed.
Cyradis doubted she would ever use it here though. This was winter
time in the south and it had to be easily 65(f) degrees outside. She
imagined it got a bit cooler at night but that wasn't saying much and
it would certainly mean she should expect some hot weather in the
summer time.
A knock on the door interrupted any further unpacking and outside,
Meledei waited. She had been in a very similar position not that long
ago when Janani had arrived. And just like back then, she had a little
something for the newest of the goldriders. Meledei shifted the
package and then patted it. It was of a decent size, but not so big
she couldn't handle it. It wasn't much, but it could be useful at
least for the time being. When the door open, a smile sprang to
Meledei's lips. "Hi!" She greeted with a warm tone.
"Hello," greeted Cyradis then she stepped back to let the younger
woman into her new quarters. "You're Elleth's," she asked. "I'm
Cyradis, nice to meet you." She chuckled and turned to move out of her
way. "Elleth has been telling Panitath all about her clutch. I take it
we're about to have a hatching then?"
"Well met, and no, not long now." Meledei slipped inside the weyr once
she was invited, though the invitation was a silent one. "I brought a
little something for you." She held out the sizable bundle. "It's
not much, but it's something you can use til you can get settled in
better.
"Well thank you very much," she smiled and took the package. "This is
very kind of you" She didn't open it immediately but indicated the
plate of nibbles. "Are you hungry at all? I thought we could get
acquainted."
"Sure." Meledei didn't usually refuse food if offered in such a
setting. Food was more than just nourishment at times. It eased
tensions and brought people together over something common. It relaxed
the air and became a social aspect as much, if not more, than a
nutritional one. "Thanks. So how do you like Dolphin Cove thus far?"
She served herself a pastry, tuber puff and a meat roll and poured a
bit of tea. "So far everything has gone very smoothly." She smiled at
the younger woman. "My youngest daughter arrived today and met her new
foster mother." Cyradis tilted her head a little ruefully. "I can't
say she was all that happy about it but there really was no other
choice."
"Thank you." Meledei accepted the food and took a polite bite before
she continued on with the conversation. "I didn't know you have
children. How many?" Were any of the dragonriders? Meledei wondered
how much family she was leaving behind. That would be difficult for
her if she had to do it, she knew. Her father was still at Dolphin
Cove.
She set down her teacup. "I have four children. The two eldest are
boys and stayed in the north. The two younger are girls. Keilya is 7
turns and came with me. Naradis is 12 and has professed her desire to
stand, so I will be consulting with the Weyrwoman to get her
permission to move here." She didn't add that the boys were closer
with their father and that had influenced their desire to stay where
they were.
"Oh, well, if she can get here before Elleth's clutch hatches, she's
more than welcome to stand for hers!" Meledei wouldn't mind another
candidate - the more the merrier after all! "Have you had a chance to
look around at all?"
"No, not really." She'd spent most of her time just getting situated
and familiar with her own weyr. "I can barely find my way around." She
turned back to the package Meledei had brought and began to open it.
Meledei watched as Cyradis unwrapped the fabric. Inside as a nice
throw rug. Not too big, but enough to be decorative. Green and gold
mingled together in pleasant patterns, woven by expert hands. "You
don't have to keep it, but I thought you could use it to decorate until
you can get completely settled and pick out things for yourself."
"Oh, it's lovely! I know just where to put this." She smiled at the
younger rider. "Thank you Meledei."
"No problem. I just thought it might be a little cheery til you can
decorate it in your style." Yes, she had greeted Janani in much the
same way, the gift had only been slightly different. "Do you need any
help with anything?"
"It is!" Cyradis had felt a warm welcome from the people she'd met at
Dolphin Cove so far and that made her very happy. Panitath was basking
in all the attention and their happy thoughts blended to give the day
a rosy glow.
"Well, come dinner time you could show me to the dining cavern." She
knew she'd appreciate dining with a friend the first night here. "If
there is anyone else you think I should meet then bring them along.
How does that sound? We can talk business tomorrow."
"I'd love to!" Meledei hadn't even gotten that much from Janani - not
that she disliked Janani. She also knew everyone was different.
Cyradis was just more receptive to something like that. "What time do
you want to meet?" The dinner hour was actually longer than an hour
and stretched over three or four, giving people on different schedules
time to come and partake.
"Around 6 good?" She still had lots of work to do in her weyr and
limited hours before dark. "Qorri said if I follow the ledge out there
it connects to your and Elleths weyr?"
"Yeah, it does. You can feel free to come that way if you like." She
seemed nice - which was good. Mean, bossy Weyrwoman weren't very
pleasant to work with. Neither were Weyrwoman who didn't do their
duties when they were supposed to, which Meledei hoped wouldn't happen
again. "So yeah, that sounds good to me!"
"Alright then," Cyradis smiled. "I'll see you at 6."
