Suynie waited a full two days after her break up with Wirnan before scheduling a time to meet with the Headwoman. She wanted to make sure she wasn’t allowing her emotions to cloud her judgement too much, but every time she thought of the Hold’s Steward and the ridiculous offer he’d made, she knew she couldn’t stay.

Knocking at the door, Suynie entered with a duck of her head. “Headwoman, thank you for meeting with me.”

"Please, Suynie, come in." Yriadha straightened in her chair and gestured to the seat across from her. "Have a seat." She had expected this after Wirnan spoke to her, but she had to admit that she didn't like that she had been right.

Suynie sat as instructed, thinking as she did that she had come full circle. This was exactly how she had started her time as the foster mother for Bryvin’s children.

“I won’t take up much of your time, Headwoman. I just wanted to give you a fortnight’s notice that I will be leaving Sunstone. I trust that will give you sufficient time to find another foster mother?”

Yriadha took a soft breath and nodded. "I see. I suppose that there's no way I can convince you to stay? The children adore you."

“Do you know of a decent man at Sunstone that doesn’t need the glitz and glitter of blood and rank? You see, I have neither, and Wirnan has been so kind as to let me know that those two things are all that matter. Up until two nights ago, I thought the Steward the most kind and honorable man I had ever met.” Her lips twisted. “I know I should be too old for such fantasies.”

It wasn't her place to explain the demands that had been placed on Wirnan; or reveal his relationship to Bryvin, or their own conversation. "Many men do not have an interest in Blood or rank." She began slowly. "And those aren't fantasies, Suynie. Many women desire the same. I would rather you not leave, honestly. You could still have a good life here and the Lord Holder values your services."

“Wirnan explained to me that he expressed his desire to marry me to Lord Bryvin and,” she swallowed hard, “that it was Lord Bryvin who
advised him against it. I am a nobody, after all.” Suynie’s eyes lifted to Yriadha’s. “Lord Bryvin may respect what I have done for his children , but it did not stop him from shattering my happiness. I
cannot work for him.”

"Ah. I see." Yriadha nodded. "And I can understand, even if I don't agree." She sighed. "Would you be so kind as to be able to train your
replacement? Help them get used to the children and they to the new nurse?"

“Yes, I can do that.” Suynie agreed only because she had truly come to love Lord Bryvin’s children.

Yriadha nodded, then pursed her lips. "Perhaps if I spoke to Lord Bryvin, would you stay?"

“Would you?” Suynie said with a hint of surprise.

"Lord Bryvin values his children's wellbeing more than anything. You're part of that. I could speak to him, but I can promise nothing."

“I’ll reserve my decision then.”

Yriadha inclined her head. "Thank you. Just in case, I would ask you to contact any woman you might know who may be suitable for your position and send them to me, if you would. As soon as Lord Bryvin is available I will discuss the matter with him. I can not say how quickly that will be, but I will attempt it in at least two sevendays."

"I understand." Suynie nodded, swiping a bit of moisture that had slipped beneath her eyes. "Thank you, Headwoman."

"You are welcome, Suynie." Yriadha rose, the conversation clearly over, and considered what she would be saying to Bryvin.
