F'nix
F'nix

Neath's sniff reflected the one of her lifemate. She took her eyes off of
the young blue and looked over to G'wen. }:He's a fine young blue, I don't
see the problem.:{

G'wen grimaced and tightened her straps. Maybe if they hurried they could
get to Amber Hills Hold and back before anyone would notice they had to run
that holder back to his Lord. Out of the corner of his eye he could see the
lifemate of the blue Neath was talking about. It didn't help his mood that
the young man looked almost like he could be G'wen's brother. No wonder
E'naer had been eyeing the lad up. The only real difference between the two
was the obvious huge size difference. Unconsciously he tightened Neath's
neck strap a bit too tight.
She grumbled and blew out at the weyrlings walking close to them.

Nisith turned to roll his eyes at her, while F'nix raised his eyebrows. He
vaguely recognised the rider, but he was cute. That made the weyrling blush
and try to smile.

:}She's cute:{ Nisith remarked.

G'wen caught the blush, along with the smile. Trying not to roll his eyes,
he nodded at the weyrling. "Hello." F'nix, he remembered the boy's name as.

"Hello," F'nix replied awkwardly. "It's a nice day." Shards, what a
pathetic thing to say!

Ah no, the weyrling looked uncomfortable, and it was all G'wen's fault.
Feeling mortified he immediately stopped trying to strangle Neath with the
strap and smiled nicer at F'nix. "It is," he agreed. "How are you liking
being a weyrling?"

F'nix grinned immediately. "I love it. Nisith is the greatest, he was worth
waiting all those turns for. He-" He realised he was gushing and stopped,
but his smile didn't fade.

"He's lovely," G'wen finished when the boy hesitated. All the jealous
little feelings about the boy tip-toed off in guilt in the face of the real
thing. He eyed over the lad again, feeling distinctly second class. No
wonder E'naer was eyeing him up, F'nix was like G'wen, only better. And
taller!

"Yeah, he is lovely." F'nix sighed. "Yours is too," he added nobly. No one
ever looked at another dragon like they looked at their own.

Neath snorted at that. G'wen shrugged his shoulders and grinned. "She
thinks you're lying," he whispered.

"I'm not lying," F'nix protested. "I'm just… well she _is_ lovely, I just
think Nisith is lovelier…"

At that G'wen giggled, particularly when it was obvious what Neath thought
of that, if the lashing of the tip of her tail was anything to do by.
Deciding now was a good time to change the subject, G'wen asked, "So were
you Holder or craft bred then?"

"What makes you think I'm not Weyrbred?" Apart from the fact that he
obviously wasn't.

"Well, we're the same age and pretty much look the same--except for
height--so don't you think I wouldn't have noticed you before?" G'wen
raised an eyebrow and chuckled.

F'nix grinned. "I thought you were handsome when I first saw you." Maybe
they were related somehow. "I was craft bred. Vintner craft." Another guy
might have wondered if G'wen's father had dropped by around twenty turns
ago, but F'nix wouldn't even consider his mother capable of cheating.

"Handsome? Me?" G'wen pulled a face which told F'nix exactly what he
thought of his own looks. "I'm way too short, I grew up being chucked under
the bloody chin all the time and told how little boy-ish I looked." He
rolled his eyes at that. "Now you, on the other hand...it must be nice to
be so tall." The last words were whispered almost to himself.

"I'm not that tall." F'nix shrugged. "There was a guy back at the hall, he
was so tall he couldn't go through doorways without almost folding himself
in two."

"I'd pay a good mark to be that tall at least for one day." G'wen's sigh
spoke volumes.

F'nix didn't really get it but he nodded anyway. "You have a dragon, that
guy didn't. He'd probably envy you more."

"True! Though..." G'wen looked mischievously up at Neath. "I'm not too sure
how he would have felt saddled with this green beast here."

Neath gave a loud snort to that.

F'nix nodded. "Well green isn't for everyone, no matter how fine the
green." He'd come a long way, but he was glad he'd impressed blue and not
green.

G;wen eyed Neath. "I'm not sure she thinks she is a green, if you get my
point." He nodded to the odd under colour of golden yellow under her dark
pine forest green.

F'nix peered at the dragon's hide and nodded. "You might be the Weyr's
first male Weyrwoman," he said, his expression deadpan.

G'wen swatted him on the shoulder, for that. But at the same time a silly
grin broke out across his face. "I think I might like you."

F'nix grinned, glad to have made another friend.
