Doors in Weyrs?

Howdy!

So, the little cannon of this we see in the book along with many fandom approaches dictate that doors in Weyrs and weyrs are made of oil cloth or other heavy fabric, with some of the store rooms in the lower or ground level caverns having wood doors since you don't want things crawling in and out of them.

But, it goes without saying in places like DCW where we have hurricanes, that if all that lies between you and the storm is a flap of heavy fabric, everyone will have a bad time.

Does Triad have a set view on this, or what do people, especially riders, do to keep safe from inclement weather?

I've always written that the higher rankers have the doors and the lower ranking weyrs have heavy hides.

I remember us having this discussion before here. The book canon does mentions hides/flaps/etc.

Now in our southern Weyrs, they were originally Weyrholds ie: they had time to improve them during the LONG Interval (aka aivas broke time) and with the advent of AIVAS technology, they might have had an easier time of it than before. They also had more resources to do it with since riders were crafters then, there was no Pass to limit their resources to tithes, etc.

But yes in some Weyrs, like DCW, things are more rudimentary due to earthquake and all that. They're just now getting their tech up to speed with the other more established Weyrholds/Weyrs like RBW.

So it's safe to say that newer weyrs which would usually go to lower ranking riders and weyrlings and such will almost always have a hide flap etc. whereas older weyrs that will usually go to older riders/rankers will most likely have some sort of door depending on what Weyr you are in. Also practicality factors in. In a tropical Weyr, it's not as necessary to have a solid door. Whereas at DFW where it gets cold as shells, it would be more likely to have something more substantial. In the tropical Weyrs, I could even see hanging shell curtains serving as doors in some cases.

I have always written doors, lol, I just think it is such a rudimentary thing... Why not? It would be an easy project for apprentice woodcrafters. But that's just me.
