And they say *english* is hard to learn?  Geez..remind me never to try to learn Finnish!  Way too difficult for me.  LOL  :D

I took Latin for 3 years, Spanish for 5--to this day the verbs still make me want to rip out my hair! *g*

I think it's impressive when others take the time to not only learn, but master another language--I never managed to with either of the ones I studied--although I can order dinner in Spanish and Latin is great if you're in law as I was for years.

I moved from Massachusetts to North Carolina four years ago, then to Tennessee two years ago.

I can't even speak Southern, much less Finnish.  (Ang!  Panda!  No comments)

I am NOT good with modern languages . . . for some reason I'm fine with Latin, which I've taken for, I don't know, a long time? French, I don't understand at all. *sighs* If you ask me the English doomed themselves to difficulty learning other languages, as we do everything based on word order and just can't understand why everyone else doesn't.

emma

hah! you want to try learning something like hebrew with a completely different alphabet, and they read the other way to us!

I'm sorry but my mom is reading over my shoulder and is the grammer police.

Emma you didn't capitalize Hebrew.

And to top it off my mom hates the word 'done'.

Such as: I'm done. As opposed to I'm finished. Since we haven't been cooked she says we can't be done. It makes my mom so mad when I tell her I'm done. It is even worse now because my daughter does it also.

Oh no she is getting out the dictionary. Run for your lives!!! :help:

I'm good with Languages.  I've taken Spanish, Japanese and Italian and have dabbled in German.

While I haven't used or taken classes in any of these languages in years and have forgotten a lot, when I was taking them, the languages came very easy to me.  If I ever go back, I'll probably pick them up easily again.

Learning languages is probably one of the few things I'm semi good at. ;-)

I have to use it to remember a skill. However I'm really bad with languages, I could learn to understand someone perfictly. To speak or write back is very difficult.  I can hardly master english, let alone spell it properly. I'm a wonderful example of an ignorant suburbanite :D.

I'm from Alabama, so i live hearing okay used over and over, and other such nuisanses such as Fixin' i.e.: I'm fixin' to go wash my car, I'm fixin to go cook supper, etc, etc.  And to top it all off, I, originally Irish, work in a _chinese restaraunt!!!_  So on top of deciphering southern dialect, I now need to learn basic chinese, korean, and indonesian just to work!  :help:  So if I'm coposting with someone and accidentally use southern dialect, smack me, allright?  LOL

PastMember

In Memphis where I used to work, they didn't even use fixin'...They used finin...Sort of combined 'fixin' to' into finin...Like...I'm finin go.

What's up with all these weird sayings?  I'm English, so all this talk about American dialects is right over my head! :dunce: I didn't even think about there being different dialects in the USA.

There are in the UK.  Where I live, people think I talk funny because I originally come from Somerset (in the south-west of the country, near south Wales).  That's farmer-land!

emma

Where's that to then? *adopts broadest brissle accent*  I used to live in Bristol and the locals confused me daily.
