Do blank areas on maps intrigue you?

Today I had some downtime at work, and I was reading the Triad site. It started by reading the FAQ entries about all of the Holds on the map that aren't active PC locations right now. Then it moved on to looking at the lovely blank spots that don't have visible holds, and wondering what kind of areas are there.

Like that giant landmass in the Sea of Azov, what kind of major hold might be there? Or what about that smaller lake which has 3 rivers feeding into it (south of Sunstone and Vista Point, north of the Range)? South of Dragonsfall, there's that browner area that stands out against the lush green - what climate is actually there, is that the closest thing to Igen's deserts that the South has?

Basically what I'm getting at is this: having this big map is so cool, because even as it shows all the played places and what we know about, there's so much space we don't know, and I think that's really awesome.

Feel free to spread this topic off in whatever direction it takes your mind. Got nostalgia for an NPC location you want to share? Been thinking about where you'd put a Hall or Hold? Just want to agree that Suzee's maps are awesome?

A thing I thought about this morning:

How would we describe the climates of each of the current Holds? Sunstone is all subtropical and humid and hurricane prone - makes me think of where I grew up in Florida. Amber Hills seems like it's in a more temperate place, having all the seasons but no major extremes. Emerald Falls doesn't seem to snow often, so it's somewhere in the middle. Does this sound about right?

Over by Emerald Falls and Dolphin Cove, there's those bright green parts that look kind of like a rich jungle or a rainforest. I think a super-hot jungle area would be an interesting location for a Hold, but I could also see that brownish area down below Opal Cove to be interesting too because it's so different from all the rest of the green areas.

As far as NPC locations...I remember when JHH was open and alot of cool stuff happened there.


And yeah blank open spaces are cool since it means possibilities. The game's always changing. I don't know if the south would have an equivalent to Igen up north due to a few reasons-1. grubs 2. nothing like that was ever mentioned in Dragonsdawn with the original stakeholds/exploration or during Piemur's journey. I would like to see more mountains aka dormant volcanoes though.

In my headcanon, that big island in middle of Sea of Azov is called Agate Island hold...(the one who's bloodline Morin presumedly belonged to and Corowal has great-great grandmother from there too. the bloodline is dead so all is left some fishing holds).

Bery Plains...just the name make me things green, open plains..like Hungarin Pusta or...Kansas. Large herds of cows (pardon, herdbeasts) grazing.

The brown area south of DFW and Opal Cove should be something like Tundra or our Lappland.

Rising Moons weyr should be surrounded by dense pinewood forests (Oregon anyone? Or Canada).

Then there are lot of NPC locations in our lore that have never placed anywhere on the map: the before mentioned Beryl Plains Hold, Onyx Hills hold, Turquoise Bay Hold, Lazur Lake Hold where Yanley was Lady Holder (maybe it's that large lake left from Garnet Valley Hold and it could be under Vista Point Weyr's protection?), the Agate Island Hold and many more.

I see the Weyr's territories as large circle around them (it would be nice to have a map where they are marked.)

And yes, Suzee's maps are just amazing.   :thumbright:

Yes. Oh god, yes. When I was younger I used to make up maps for fun. Maps are amazing. My living room wall is covered by a giant retro map of the moon. Part of my job involves staring at maps! <3

I don't so much think of the cotholds and whatnot on the Triad map so much as the roads between them, and the streams and rivers, and the way people move, and what they grow, and what it would be like to journey across it - on foot or on a dragon. Mostly on foot - I am intreagued by the way people are constrained by roads. Roads force them to go certain ways whether they want to or not.

Rivers and waterways were much more in use in previous times.  That's how places were settled and why they were positioned where they were.
