Learning To Read Sets

I have grandchildren.  Yes, it's true.  The eldest can read, I hope, since she's 16, but one of the little ones (nearly 6, so almost a year at school now) is a self-motivated kid who really seems to want to read.  (Cheering from the crowd.)  Neither of her parents are readers so she's pretty much on her own.

I want to buy her one of those reading sets where they work through each book in a level and then go on to the next level because I reckon she's motivated enough that she will be able to work her own way through those.  She's on a Dick and Jane omnibus I bought her ages ago and she's worked her way through that from easier stories to harder ones.  (This also means she's bilingual in UK and US spelling!)

Anyway, does anybody have suggestions of good sets?  I know some of our Triad members have kiddies about this age, and some are teacher-people.

My six year old cousin loves the 'Gruffalo' books. 'Charlie and Lola' are another favourite.

Jane, are you only looking for workbooks or suggestions for books for early readers as well?

I know that phonics cards are great for children learning to read, but she'd need someone to help her with those so it sounds like not the best bet for her.
