HTML email messes up regular email programs, making coposters have to reformat, if they can reply properly at all. There is no need for colored fonts and huge lettering or any other HTML format in email outside of AOL itself. It also makes emails larger and bulkier, which is utterly unfair to members with small mailbox sizes.

AOL 6.0 or higher is banned from the list (using the AOL program to send email), as there is NO way to turn off HTML email in AOL. Please use the AOL webmail interface at http://www.aol.com/ or get a free email address elsewhere.

In Eudora 4.x:
On the menu, select Tools, then Options.
Click Styled Text.
Click "Send plain text only"
Click OK

In Netscape 4.0 or later:
On the menu, select Edit, then Preferences, then "Mail and NewsPreferences"
Select tab "Compositions"
Remove the check mark for "Use HTML Composition Window"
Make sure that "Allow 8-bit" is checked
Make sure that "MIME compliant" is NOT checked
Click OK

In the Internet Explorer 3.0 news program:
On the menu, select News, then Options
Select the Send tab
Check the "Plain Text" box
Click OK.

In Outlook Express:
On the menu, select Tools, then Options
Select the Send tab
Check the "Plain Text" boxes in both Mail and News
Click OK.

In Yahoo Webmail: When composing an email from Yahoo, the default setting is "Color And Graphics" (next to the word Compose on the entry screen). Please click on "Plain Text" before sending your email. Also, go to Mail Options ---> General Preferences, and set your "Screen Width: (composing)" to at least 76, as it makes your emails too narrow to read properly otherwise.
