Plots!

I'm always curious as to what other folks are plugging away at. I have no real plot, and only three characters so far. My story is set in a Victorian-esque city so far, and the 'hero' is a young war widow who sees a man who is exactly like her dead husband at the opera. Except it will be revealed that he is not her husband at all! I don't know who/what he is or why he has a not-him wandering around, but it's a start.

It's also very, very badly written. XD But I guess that's the point.

Ooooh, doppelgangers! I love doppelgangers, Yvonne! :D

My story is sort of a teasing reaction to how popular urban fantasy has gotten recently. :D It involves America's first Celebrity Monster Hunter who is pretty much a big egotistical fraud who does it for the fame and money and women, and is written from the point of view of his office manager/secretary sort of person.

I think I've sort of found my plot, too... *g* Not 100% sure yet, but I know where the next 5,000 or so words are going at least!

My story is revenge oriented!  

I have a Robert Jordan character, Kallandra, I've been writing for years and years.

Her son was killed - murdered and tortured - by a servant of the enemy, and she is now after said servant like all the hounds of hell!!

But I still need to get writing more!

:oops:  My story is basically an excuse to play with an exercise in world building thats been rattling around in my head a few years...

 It gets really complicated, and I haven't fugured it all out yet. But the basic premise is that if you believe something, it will come true... which means there are a lot of popular novel characters, old legendary figures, alternate worlds, etc. floating around. Magic works because people want it to work, and the more people who believe in something, the more likely it is to come into being.

 THE CATCH is that when people stop believing, the created beings stop existing too. Or in the case of popular legendary or novel characters, when a different interpretation gains popularity, they wind up with self-destructive multiple personalities. So to prevent this, beings who know they exist because someone believed in them tend to band together and live together, so that they can believe each other into continued existence. They've created their own shadow kingdoms that exist sandwiched between our world and the fantasy worlds (some of which paradoxically also exist with the ability to believe their own legends into being).

In summary, take one guy who exists in our world and the believed world, who doesn't know if he was created by someone or not. Make a normal girl crush on him, and get attacked by a multiple personaity crazed ex-legend who is going crazy because he is being un-believed out of existence, and wind these three people into a massive identity crisis that can make or break the existence of the believed mini-kingdom and also involves a local broadcasting heiress who has been bound by ancient magic to marry the guy against her will. The whole thing gets very messy, but there's a lot of wordage involved -when I can find the time to write it.

Ooh, everyone has great plots that I'd love to read :D I love your idea, Rochelle, and it seems very intricate! It must have taken a long time. And Bree's idea of Celebrity Monster Hunter made me giggle out loud. Revenge and dopplegangers...wow, we seem to be going everywhere on these plots.

(I confess I've been bad and haven't written since Friday, so I'm still at 7 thousand words. I should spork myself!)

Mine's about three college students who discover an alien invasion. Seriously. Nice happy lives, labs start blowing up, weird meteor showers, and unusual fragments of something never before seen start showing up. Then it turns out it ties into the past tragedy of one of the main characters, and then there's capture by the aliens and torture. It initially had a "they escape and destroy the invaders", but I decided that was too happy, so I rewrote it to "they escape with their lives and the knowledge of the invaders and that's it".

How's everyone doing with the plot? I'm having a real problem with paranoia in mine. See, I want to start with the weird event of the lab explosion and then slowly build tension, but I'm having problems working it in right. I plan to complicate it where one character, Almeta, is the one consumed by the paranoia, but her friend Vaughn thinks she's crazy. Especially since she grew up on the streets sometimes and generally in a bad way, so they don't trust it. But then...she's right.

I'll show off a sample of how I did work in some paranoia though, with a before and after snippet!

Before:

Lysander rang up the items that Xavier was carrying. "Best be careful, then." he warned. "Hear some odd this have been going on in some rural areas. Disappearances and such. Wouldn't want any of you caught up in anything like that."

After:

There was an odd tone to his voice as he said that, as if he was trying to convey a message without actually trying to- or maybe, Almeta thought with another twist in her gut, maybe he was trying to pass on a message without anyone else realizing he was trying to pass one on.

Think the addition works, or not really?
