Random question re: retired goldriders.

This came up in another club of mine, and of course it started me wondering on things, especially as Triad lists retired goldrider as something that can be gotten here (a Level 5 rank, to be exact!).

What, exactly, would a retired goldrider do? I imagine she'd be an older woman, yes, because her dragon's too old to mate? See, over there, the discussion blossomed into "could a retired goldrider be a Weyrlingmaster?" seeing as golds can control all dragons and thus easily take rambunctious weyrlings into hand. Now, I'm not asking "would Triad allow a retired goldrider as Weyrlingmaster?" I'm more curious as to how Triad sees retired goldriders right now. What kind of people are they? What constitutes a retired goldrider? If they're not actively involved in flying Thread or flights or hatchings, what in the world do they and their riders do?

Like I said, it might seem a weird question, but curiosity was sparked in me and I wanted to see how Triad played it.

The last one we had was a while ago, but it really depends on the character herself. She would be retired because her dragon isn't rising to mate anymore, and she probably would be fairly old and not particuarly robust. However, what she chose to do with her life after that would be up to her. She could be an advisor, she could practice a craft if she had one before, she could be a teacher...

So I guess my answer is, there is no "set" job for a retired goldrider any more than there is for any retired rider. They can't do the jobs they did as young riders, but they can still find any and all possible ways to be useful. I have a retired bluerider, and he spends most of his time practicing his craft, as mind healing is something that can still be done with achy tired joints. ;)
