Mentoring questions

Hi all,
I'm thinking about switching from lurker to member, but I'm a bit confused about the mentoring thing. The FAQs list two mentoring rules; the first that it lasts one month and the second that it lasts for three postings. I'm new to the pbem thing, but I want to give it a shot and I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious.  :) I could care less if you mentor me to kingdom come -I love to write and I use it as a way to relieve stress, as well as daydreaming about dragons!- but my RL is so hectic that sometimes I don't have time to sleep. I'm assuming the minimum mentoring time is a month with the three postings, but tell me if I'm wrong here please! Also, do the mentors mind if they have someone who can only post occassionally on their roster?
Oh, and a question about the unranked thing. I read that unranked personas do not have a posting minimum, yet elsewhere it said that if you do not post within a specified timeperiod you go inactive?
Thanks for letting me babble!  :D

Hey there!

Everyone must be on mentorship for at least one month. However, if they haven't produced three uncorrected posts within that one month, they will stay on mentorship until they have written three uncorrected posts. :) That can be a little confusing, I know!

As for activity... you can post as often or as rarely as you want with unranked personas. We don't usually enforce the inactivity rule unless a member fails to reply to our periodic roll calls. All you have to do to stay a member is to drop an e-mail during a roll call and say you're still around!

I hope that answeres your questions! If you have anymore, keep on asking them! :D

Thanks Bree! That does help!

I did one clarification on one more point thoughh. If a specific persona is not listed in the level rankings (say a candidate or a greenrider) are they considered unranked, or do I have to dig farther to find that info?

Thanks again!

Do you mean ranked as in level one etc?

If so, then yes, unleass said greenrider or candidate happens to have some reason to hold a rank, they have no requirements each month.

By a reason it could be a greemrider who happens to hold the rank of Master Crafter as well, or a candidate with a gold flit

Eimi

Yeah.  The Rank level isn't anything to worry about.  That is just a special case type thing.

There are two scroll down windows - "Rank" and "Rank Level" right?  Well, "Rank" is the job of that persona - Wingleader, Wingrider, Candidate, Crafter...  Some of those job automatically have ranks associated with them (Wingleader is Level 2, Headwoman Level 3, Candidate No Rank).  Usually you just leave "Rank Level" alone.  It is set to "Default Ranking".  That means it will automatically assume that the persona is the rank that you have chosen (for example a Wingleader is automatically Level 2, Candidate automatically has No Rank).  That is automatic, so you don't even have to touch Rank Level (I ignore it completely in fact)

BUT, if you have a candidate with a Gold Flit, then you would use "Rank Level" to refelct that.  Or if a Crafter (no rank) is a HAD (Hears all dragons) than that will change their ranking.

Does that clear it up?

Bree

Actually, no one not on the Council should EVER fiddle with Rank Level! Doing that will just cause us headaches. :D The website is quite smart and can almost always figure out what ranks people hold on its own. Messing around with Rank Level can cause problems later on down the line, so generally speaking it's best if you just keep it set to 'Default Level'.

There are a very VERY few cases when it needs to be used (gold flits aren't actually one of them--gold flits are automatically ranked) so for my sanity, please pretend it's not even there. :D

The Rank Level has nothing to do with actual Rank and more to do with how we keep track of posting requirements, so it's only needed behind the scenes. ;)

Thanks for the help! This really clears a few things up. I think you've convinced me to join more permanently...

Look to see more of me, whether you want to or not! (Persona questions come to mind... nah. I'll save those  for the mentor if I can't figure it out  :P )
Thanks Again!

Okay, one last question and I swear I'll get off this thread!

To get a mentor, do I need to e-mail someone? Or are they assigned?

 Rochelle

Bree

We will assign you one shortly! :D

And NEVER stop asking questions! We love the questions! Ask them all day long. ;)
