Anyone else? :)

General Copost Requests / New EFF Body

I've just had a new persona approve d- Ashera, Hold Resident at Emerald Falls. Drop me an email if you'd like coposts with a good Holdergirl who just hasn't made up her mind what to do in life -- nor been married off yet!

Welcome!

I have no one at DCW, but may have one at Emerald Falls Hold soon - we'll see if she ends up coming to the weyr. Or if you ever want an excuse to come to the Hold, I'm sure we can concoct something! :)

Sharing, Fun, & Silliness / Re: Pern Movie?
April 20, 2011, 02:34:57 AM
I have faith in this one... they're not trying to make it a trilogy-in-one, and they're capitalizing on nostalgia and SFX with authors of a fantasy/sci fi bent. There's Game of Thrones; talk about an American Gods HBO series... Pern is a viable combination of sci-fi and fantasy (most people throwing dragons in as fantasy, though McCaffrey is SF) and I think they realise the money in the bank if they can pull it off.

Let me get some of these concepts all settled down in my head, and I'll see what I can do to help you out. ;)

Sharing, Fun, & Silliness / Re: Pern Movie?

Quote from: "Erin S"I have mixed feelings about this. If the movie is good, and if it's true to ANNE'S canon, it could be very good. Especially because more interest in the books = more people for fandom.

I do have a fear that they will try to "modernize" it, by adding some of Todd's Canon as well, or try to monopolize on the "Harry Potter effect" and make Lessa's mental "pushing" seem more magical. Both of which will result in a ton of people for fandom who won't understand why we cling to the old books so much.

I feel similarly. As long as they're explicit about precisely which book it is being done. Since the same scriptwriter wrote Watchmen, I'm hoping that they won't pretty it up - Lessa will still get slapped and do some slapping, the fights will still be nasty fights, Fax will be a wretched beast of a ruthless tyrannical man, drudges won't be "treated equally", etc. The biases that make Pern clearly something that's not just "Earth with Dragons" should be present, and with this scriptwriter, he won't be toning them down. What the studio does... that I'm a bit more worried about.

Now would be the time for those of us in Pern fandom, who have been in it for however long, to drop some letters/e-mails of encouragement his way and let him know we hope for a faithful adaptation, and are curious if Ms McCaffrey will be getting an opportunity to comment on the proposed screenplay, if changes are being made.

I'm not joking!

http://www.deadline.com/2011/04/david-hayter-to-adapt-scifi-book-series-dragonriders-of-pern/

For those for whom the links are blocked/can't access:

"David Hayter has been set to write the script for Dragonflight, the first novel in a series that includes 22 novels generated by Anne McCaffrey. Steve Hoban's Copperheart Entertainment has teamed with Hayter and Benedict Carver's Dark Hero Studios and Angry Films partners Don Murphy and Susan Montford on the project. Entertainment One is also a partner and has gotten the project off the ground by acquiring distribution in Canada, with talks ongoing to acquire numerous other territories that will include the UK and Australia."

and

"Hayter's sci-fi/fantasy script credits include X-Men and Watchmen, while Murphy and Montford's work includes Transformers, At the Mountains of Madness and the upcoming Shawn Levy-directed Hugh Jackman starrer Real Steel. It was Hayter and Carver who brought in Entertainment One's Patrice Theroux. Hoban said that the conceptual art has been generated and Hayter should have a script later this year. The plan is to get the flying dragons off the ground by next year. "

I don't plan on throwing any spoilers -- India's a few seasons behind on a handful of things. I'm possibly going to be getting send DVDs with the tv episodes, so... I understand completely the "Why did you _say_ that!?" . At the same time - nice to know who is and is not interested in things, so I know who I can rant with, and who simply doesn't want to know.

I think Sky will be showing GoT concurrently... I'm not sure about the Borgias.

So... I'm a girl who likes her epic plots of intrigue, drama, romance, betrayal, power... all of that. And look! "The Borgias" on Showtime and Game of Thrones on HBO (US stations). Is anyone else out there watching these, plan to...? I'd love to have people to gossip, moan, and groan with - cheer at the awesome, and sob at the "wait, WHAT?" moments.

For those who haven't read the books - Game of Thrones is based off of George RR Martin's _A Song of Ice and Fire_ series, and all I can say is 'epic complicated high political fantasy', and 'the man has no compunctions about killing characters'.

The Borgias is based off of the historical family from Spain that moved to Italy, took over the Papacy, and was the basis for Niccolo Macchiavelli's "The Prince".

There's a 15-minute preview of GoT you can find around, and the first episode of the Borgias is out already. :)

Quote from: "Becki"Welcome, Diya!

It's great to have fresh mea-- I mean, new people. ;)

You don't want to make a candidate for River Bluff ... you want to make one for Dolphin Cove. ;)

Oh, fresh meat... sacrificial wherry... I know how it works. ;)

The concept I have in mind for EFF might actually be able to be recruited (somewhat against her will) for Dolphin Cove, but I'm still trying to sketch out her worldview. And as I slowly settle in, hopefully I'll get a persona in more than just three places (I've seen those banners!) but we'll see how it goes.

Quote from: "Erin S"You say currently in India, where else have you been/where did you originate? I'm in Northern Virginia.

Born and raised in New England (CT), spent some time abroad in Germany, a year in Denmark (og jeg stadigvæk taler og skriver lidt dansk, fordi jeg har ikke glemmede den!), CT/MN for university, some time in Canada with my fiance, and then out to India now that the man and I got hitched and he got a job out here.

I rather feel as if "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" should be my themesong. For you whippersnappers who weren't kids when it was on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuzc4jgwlT8 (anyone else remember the game show? ;) )

NaNoWriMo & Other Writing / Re: Script Frenzy?
April 06, 2011, 08:29:10 PM
Script Frenzy is the April scriptwriting equivalent of NaNoWriMo. 100 pages (screenplay, stageplay, radio drama, even a comic/graphic novel format), giving those who want to write scripts a chance to strut their stuff... or try to! You can even do adaptations - so if you wanted to create your very own Pern movie, you could try your hand at adapting one of the books for screen (big or small).

The neat thing is that because it's 100 pages, that's about the length of an average feature-length film, and a bit longer than a TV pilot if you do a 90-minute one; stuff usually gets trimmed down or adjusted, and it's 1 page=1 minute on screen.

It's my first year doing Frenzy, and I'm stumbling through merrily. :)

Is anyone else in Triad doing this? I'd love to add more bodies to my writing buddies list... ;)

I'm on as "anakhronismos", if anyone else is and would like someone to gripe, complain, encourage, or plot with.

Introductions / A most informal introduction

Hi!

Newbie to Triad here, though by no means to Pern, PBeMs, or roleplaying in general. I'm currently over in India, where my husband teaches at a private boarding school, so I'm inhaling Hindi as fast as I can get my tongue around it. I'm more than a wee bit of a language nerd, and if I could figure out how to get a linguistic anthropologist Harper, well... I would. ;) Currently to keep myself busy in real life, I'm knitting a sweater, and tutoring English as a second language.

Currently, I've adopted Bryndon at Vintner Hall, and will probably be creating a Holder for Emerald Falls, and a rider or Candidate for River Bluff (spreading my attentions out, as it were) and would be welcome to discussing ties and the like as I get settled in.

I look forward to playing with you all!

Apologies for the utterly groan-worthy topic line, but I had to catch attention _somehow_!

I'm new to Triad, and have adopted Bryndon of Vintner Hall, a senior apprentice. I'm looking for any folks interested in coposting with a Triad newbie and getting some things going over there. Bryndon is, at this point, the only persona I'm working with (more likely to follow), so anyone who can come up with an excuse to head towards the Crafthall, I'd welcome the chance!
