Description: D'lorn introduces Aldryn to Villith.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 2 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Solieira; Follows "Adjustments Being Made"
It was an overcast day and D'lorn was thinking it was probably going
to rain soon. The man was sitting at his desk trying to finish up grading
some lesson hides. There would be a clutch soon which made things in
the barracks different. Anxiety and excitement ran higher and that meant
drama and hormones.
The door was open and Aldryn paused in the doorway. "Excuse me, sir.
You said to come see you later."
"Oh yes, right." He stood up and stretched before setting the hides in a
pile for later to keep them straight. Then he came around the desk and
approached the doorway. "Yes, Aldryn, Villith would like to meet you."
He signaled for the boy to follow him.
"Thank you, sir." Aldryn followed the 'Third outside, telling himself
not to be nervous.
Once the got outside of the barracks, it was a short walk to where the
green dragon was waiting. She wasn't the largest of her species by a long
shot, but Villith sure thought herself impressive. Her whirling blue eyes
came closer as she tried to get a good look at the approaching candidate.
"Aldryn, this is Villith. Villith, this is Aldryn, one of our new candidates.
He came here from a hold." D'lorn explained it all out loud for the candidate's
benefit.
Aldryn bowed. "I'm very pleased to meet you, Villith." His heart beat
a little fast. She was so _big_ and greens were the smallest dragons!
She made a small grunt of approval at his manners. He should be pleased
to meet her, after all. Coming closer to sniff the candidate and to rub her nose
over his hair for a moment, she stepped back again.
}:He will Impress, but he will have to be a holder no more:{
**I know. He's having a hard time adjusting. That's what I am going to try and
help with.**
"She says nice to meet you too, Aldryn. Villith wants to know what you
think of the Weyr?" D'lorn drew him out with questions.
"It's a lovely place, with so many beautiful creatures like you." The
Candidate's heart was still beating fast but he felt a little calmer,
a slight smile playing on his face. The way she rubbed his hair
tickled a bit. "Although it's a lot to take in."
"It is different yes, but if you just do a little bit at a time, maybe
it's easier."
D'lorn hoped the boy wouldn't be one of the ones that never worked it out.
They ended up damaged in the end.
Aldryn half turned toward D'lorn. "May I touch her?" He hadn't just
been flattering, the green really was beautiful. Especially those
gently whirling eyes.
"Sure. She likes for people to scratch her eye ridges or under her chin."
Villith rumbled her agreement at this, bringing her head closer so the boy
would have no problems reaching it. As a vain green, she had no problems
with being properly admired.
The Candidate reached up to scratch her eye ridges, his smile
widening. "I can't wait to have one of my own." Touching her was quite
an experience. What would it be like to be bonded to a dragon? To have
a voice inside his head?
"It can be hard for some, easier for others. There's an adjustment to having
someone who can read your thoughts. And still, they are separate from you
with their own personality, thoughts, and feelings. Those can be hard to deal
with too." D'lorn wanted him to know it wasn't all flowers. "Villith
is particularly
demanding of me and my time but because I love her, I make the sacrifice."
"I wouldn't mind giving up time." His life wasn't worth anything
without a dragon, after all.
"Of course not everyone Impresses. What will you do if that happens? Go back
to the Hold?" It was something they all to think about and prepare for. D'lorn
liked to gently remind the new candidates of the eventuality.
"I can't." Dread pooled in his stomach. What would he do if a dragon
never chose him? "I... I mean, I'll have to give it some thought, sir."
"Ah so you'd rather stay here then? If that's the case lad, you'd
better have a craft
or something in mind. All the Weyrfolk here work to earn their keep."
They wouldn't kick him out but laziness wasn't tolerated.
Aldryn didn't want to explain _why_ he couldn't leave. "I was an
understeward back at the Hold ... would I be able to get work like
that?"
"The headwoman has assistants mind. Perhaps you could be one of
those?" At the Weyr, that was usually women's work since most of the
Lower Caverns folk were women, with the men crafting or doing other work.
Still, D'lorn supposed he could help out if he wanted.
"I would like that. Or perhaps someone could help me match my skill
set to a craft? I don't want to be a burden." He tried to be
reasonable, yet positive. It might take a while for him to find a
lifemate and he needed something to do. He didn't want to think about
never Impressing.
"If your writing is good, you might could be something of a harper. A
scribe maybe." They helped with Records and certainly stewards dealt
with those to a point.
Aldryn thought for a moment. "That's a possibility."
"Well you think about it and talk to the Headwoman and we'll see what can
be done." D'lorn stayed back and let him admire Villith a bit longer, thinking
to himself about what he'd been like as a youngster.
"Thank you sir." Aldryn gave Villith another scratch. **I won't have
to worry about that. My dragon will find me. I hope.**
