They're reviewing the character, but I think the concept is in a weird gray area that wasn't discussed in later books. There's some discussion of it early in the books, and a brief nod to it in Dolphins, but otherwise I don't know if it's really discussed in the books. I honestly didn't realize it until I submitted it how much information is actually lacking on the concept in the books, both earlier and later.
