Title: What about...
Post by: Heather on May 11, 2016, 08:28:13 AM
Changing "Favorite Romantic Couple" to "Favorite Couple"? For example, when Rorela and Harki get together, that's hilarious, and I'd love to nominate their friendship, but it doesn't really fit in the "Romantic Couple" category.

I think it's easier to call it "Favorite Couple" rather than creating a whole separate category because there's not always a budding friendship that could be nominated and in return, there's not *always* a "romantic" couple deserving of the nomination for that cycle. Having it be "Couple" opens up the door for a larger nominating pool--- and I hate having categories that you just feel obligated to put *something* because no one has been nominated in it.  (Like, honestly, some Crayons there *isn't* a most interesting dragon or flit, because maybe one wasn't written for much that go round.)

Anyway, just throwing this idea out there.

Funny you ask this today! There's been a few requests for a "Favorite Friendship" category. We've been discussing changes and modifications to the existing categories, possibly in the form of a "rotating category", for which we were going to take suggestions. So if people have ideas for other category changes, please post them here and we'll listen.

Well, I would also suggest consolidating "Favorite Male/Female" with "Most Intriguing Male/Female" those two categories seem to generate the same rotation of personas.

And maybe rotate Villain/ess and Victim could be categories that rotate out. It's generally the same three personas for each category, just nominated in a rotation, haha, because the club only has so many villainous personas.

Favorite Character We Miss--- I understand this is suppose to give an incentive to write for a persona that hasn't been written in a while... but it tends to reward the inactive for being... inactive?

Just thinking "out loud" :)

I agree with a lot of this. Rotating some categories while consolidating others would simplify things while keeping the voting interesting. But I might want to keep the Favorite Characters We Miss category; we did finally get a post about Vell out of it.

How about a "Favorite Non-Dragonrider" category? Looking through the nominations 3/4 tend to be dragonriders, so maybe this would be a good incentive for people writing crafters, holders, etc.

I think we might have more people nominating if we shook things up so it wasn't the same ole same ole.

We could have broader categories, and therefore, less of them, to make the Crayons a little more coveted. I'd rather be nominated because someone genuinely wants to nominate me, rather than them just nominating to receive marks for it.

Categories like:

Best Male
Best Female
Best Dragonrider
Best Non-Dragonrider
Best Pair (Couple or Friendship)
Best Title
Best Quote (from a post?)

Ideas, ideaaaass!

I was just thinking (and I really hope I don't upset anyone with this idea), but seeing the huge amount of work that goes into the Crayons again each time, might it be an idea to make them bi-annually instead of quarterly? Have a summer and winter edition, for example? It might take some of the strain off our moderators.

The only problem I see with this is that a lot of great posts and characters would be missed out on because of the numbers of posts there would be in 6 months.

So I'm going to say this-I'm grateful for any nomination I get. And for those that think I nominate simply to get the marks-I don't. I nominate the people I read that I think are worthy of the categories. As do most of my fellow members from what I can see. I know Leigh agonizes over her nominations (at least she used to). That being said, yes there are some categories we could rotate out like maybe even the best new persona ones when there aren't any new personas in that timeframe for the friendship category or something like it. I do like the intriguing category though because sometimes it does go to a character that isn't a main character or that is developing that might never get a shot at main character/persona awards. I myself don't get a shot at the romantic couple one very often because I suck at romance. But hey, I don't begrudge those who don't. If I was going to add any awards, I might suggest some that are non character-related. Like Most Likely to Offer a Co-Post or To Send a Plot Idea. I will second Heather, though, that it could be good to have a specific nonrider category.

This idea has a lot of potential. I agree with Heather's concerns that if we did it every 6 months, there would be outstanding posts that got lost in the shuffle. Just because I keep a list of my favorite posts each month for noms doesn't mean everyone else does. Right now, we're doing 4 rounds a year, or every 3 months.

Hypothetically, we could look at 3 rounds of Crayons a year (doing them every 4 months). What do folks think?

I don't recall agonizing, but three Crayons a year sounds perfectly fair to me.

Ooh, what if you did three and then do one around New Years that are Yearly awards? So any persona or post that won throughout the regular crayons is now automatically nominated to be voted on for Most Intriguing Persona of the Year, etc, and winning those could be worth more.

Hey, that sounds cool. Could be worth a shot. :-D
