Title: Persona Name Pronunciation
Post by: Heather on July 04, 2014, 12:09:06 PM
I am sure this has been discussed before, but here we are again......... How do you pronounce your personas names? I am from the South so everything tends to get a diphthong added to it =P So here is how we are going to do this!

Pick 5 persona names that you would like to know how to pronounce and the owner of the persona can answer! (TIP: You can even tell how you have been pronouncing it, hehehe) =D

Here we go:

Five I Would Like To Know:

1. Aileyan (I have been pronouncing this "Alien" which I am sure must be wrong, haha)
2. R'enh (I am torn between "RIN" and "Renee" Hahaha!)
3. Cyradis (I say Sear-ah-dis, or is it SY?)
4. Teseada (Tess-ee-ada?)
5. Ikalis (Ick-a-liss?)

So Paula, Suzee, Emma and Avery... please tell me how to CORRECTLY say their names =D

Once upon a time I travelled to the US and met up with a Pern writing friend.  We'd been writing together for 5 years and regularly chatting on IM.  It was only when we were together in the same room trying to discuss plots did we realise we were perfectly familiar with typing and reading our character's names but we couldn't actually say them with any fluency ... or sometimes say them at all! :)

I've already asked Heather about F'aen (Fain).

Five I Would Like To Know:

1. Cyradis for me too (I thought Ky-rah-dis)
2. Riveenata (Riven-ah-ta?)
3. K'lvin (Kliv-in?)
4. C'jex (favourite guess ... Sex?)
5. Ninaine (Nin-eye-nee?)

Interested to hear what the real pronunciation is from Suzee, Avery, Heather, Ames, and Miriah.

C'jex as "sex" is my new head fanon.

Five I'd like to know:
Kielya: My head pronunciation is "Kill ya." I think that says more about my psyche than the character, LOL>
Keayd: I alternate between "keyed" and "cade"
Meledei: Does it sound like "Melody" or "Mele-DAY"
Rhosyn: Is it like "rosin" (the stuff you put on a violin bow), or Rose-in
Lanniya: Luh-NEE-yuh? LAN-ee-uh? Luh-NYE-uh?

Jane, your guess is spot on. Heather, yours is close - it's Ick-al-is, middle syllable stressed.

1.) Naevyn. Is it Neigh-vin? Na-eh-vin?
2.) Qorri. Quo-ree (like the beginning of "quote")?
3.) Yriadha. Is the Yr like "ear"?

Pretty good guesses up there Ladies:

Cyradis = (Sigh-rah-dis) emphasis on the second syllable
Keilya = (Keel-ya) emphasis on the first syllable
R'enh = (Renn: like Ben... the h is silent)

The problem with me and pronunciation is that my native languege is pronunced as it's written and I tend to think my character's names in finnish language.
:)

Aileyan I would say Ailejan (beginning from Aileen, end like Ian, or swedish Jan)
Keayd, = ceid or more accurately: Käit

In finnish d often becomes t and b become p

And I would have sworn it's Ky-rah-dis

In my mouth Saibra would become Saipra.

OMG -- That is TOO funny and I will forever think of my bluerider in a new light!! HAHAH...funny that 'sex' is a fitting pronunciation for him!

Actually I've always pronounced it by breaking the two parts --- Cee Jeks....but his new nickname in my head will be 'sex'! LOL

Jane, I adopted K'lvin so I don't know how the original owner's intent but I say:

Kluh-vin

Hmmm
Qorri=Korri. Heh. Or Kor-ee to be more accurate.
Rhosyn=This is actually a welsh name that I stole.
In welsh, it is said hrah-SIN (i know makes no sense). but in my head, she's gone with the more english version of Rah-sin.
So when R'enh called her Roz, it's a shortened form. It means little rose and in Irish, it's Roisin.

:)

Actually in my head I say "Neye-vin", being a (Dutch) Latin teacher I have to pronounce the ae that way, hehe!

Cool thread idea, I'll have to think on some names I'd like to know myself :)

Meledei - Meh-leh-deh-ee

If you aren't careful with the last two Syllables, it will sound like 'day'.  If you're familiar with Japanese and how it's pronounced, then pronounce the vowels in that manner. :)

And while I know not all the pronounciations are correct according to the owners, I can't help myself.  I'll try to pronounce them properly from now on.

Naevyn - Nay - vin.
Qorri. - Koh-ree
Yriadha - Ee-ree-ah-dah
Rhosyn - Rah-sin
R'enh - Rehn
K'lvin - Kluh-vin, but the Kluh is very, very short.
Ninaine - Nee- neye-neh
Aileyan - Eye-leh-yahn
Keayd - Kade
Cyradis - Si-rah-dihs
Saibra - Seye-bruh
Lanniya - Lah-nee-yuh
Teseada - Teh-say-duh
Keilya - Kale-yuh
C'jex - Kuh-jex, with the kuh being very very very short.
Ikalis - Ee-kah-lihs

So for anyone interested, here's how to pronounce all of my character's names.

Aini - AH-ee-nee.  It's a real Japanese name.
Briata - Bree-YAH-tah
Caenir - KAY-neer
Irabel - EE-ruh-bell
J'ren - Juh-REHN, with the Juh spoken extremely short.
Kaya - KEYE-yuh
Meledei- MEH-leh-deh-ee
Relea - Reh-LEH-uh
Sofeya - Soh-FEH-yuh
Vandor - VAN-Door
Zathris - ZA-thris (a, as in cat)

Nope. Nye (like eye)- naine (long a, rhymes with rain)

Nope - Tess - ay - da

It's prounced the same way either way, just depends on how you break it up phoenetically I think. :}

Actually the difference is slight but its there. There would be a glottal stop between the SS and AA sounds in Emma's version.

Okay, now I'm even more confused.  Emma, I seriously wanna pronounce it right.  I now, I'm weird.  You wouldn't be willing to record  it would you? *G*

Amanda, you are saying "Tehseada"  and Emma is saying "Tesssssseada" :P Does that help? You are putting an "eh" sound in there and Emma is not but is hitting a strong SSS sound. Like... SSSSSSSnake =P hehehe
