Title: Swimming in the Weyrlake
Post by: Yvonne on March 25, 2003, 08:39:55 PM
Swimming in the Weyrlake at DFW. Is it cold enough to induce hypothermia? Or just slightly cool? It's underground, so I'm not sure ...

Help!

i've given a few of my 'sonas a dunking in the lake before and they survived, but it was summer.  wouldn't like to hazard a guess on winter temps.

There are TWO weyrlakes at DFW.  The summer lake (on top of the plateau) and the winter lake (in the base level cavern).

The winter lake is heated from springs beneath it, with a constant temperature, and while the cavern it's in is too large to be heated, it maintains a fairly constant temperature that's warm enough for scrubbing a dragon, so swimming wouldn't be a problem.

The summer lake on the top is also spring fed (there is a small creek that runs down the back of the plateau near the steep 'goat-trail' they use to bring up livestock).  But while the spring is warmish outputting into the lake, during the winter the air temperature is very cold.  I don't think it would completely freeze solid, but there'd definately be days it would have ice, particularly when the temperature has dropped below freezing by several degrees and stayed there.

I just realized there is no map of the plateau top (how on Pern did I miss doing that???).  Will have to rectify that error.

Sorry for the age old *bump* but I just found this post...

What else is on top the Plateau besides the lake?  Is there a map somewhere that got lost or does one need to be made?

The location guide, found on the website, has this informtion:

http://www.triadweyrs.org/places/locdfw.php (http://www.triadweyrs.org/places/locdfw.php)

All the Weyrs/Holds have a location guide and most have at least a basic map. Dragonsfall, being the most fully realized (at least as far as I can tell) by the founding member(s), has at least 4 maps.
