Title: Urgent Computer Warning
Post by: Suzee on January 11, 2013, 05:56:59 PM
Quote***URGENT COMPUTER WARNING***
AFFECTS BOTH WORK AND PERSONAL COMPUTERS

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued a software alert for all computers running Java version 7.  Java software is found on nearly all computers, including desktop, laptop, and VDI computers.

There is currently no resolution for this vulnerability.

Your computer and personal identity can be compromised if you visit a compromised website.  Until the vendor offers a patch to fix the problem, we are asking Alliant employees to visit only business related websites.

We strongly recommend the following actions:

1.       Visit only legitimate business websites.
2.       Disable JAVA – Below are instructions to disable JAVA software.  While this is the most effective action you can take, there is a possibility it could affect your ability to browse a legitimate business websites.

To disable JAVA please click the link below for instructions:

Thank you,

I received this at work today from our Corporate Helpdesk. It looks like the Version 7 of Java was just released yesterday so you may be ok if you simply disable updates. You can use the above instructions to find your Java installation and check your version.  Version 6 or earlier should be safe at this point but no guarantees.

If you are concerned just disable it entirely until a solution is found.

Yeah I saw that and I also got an email from Norton saying I was protected from the bug. Ah well. No IE for me anyway until I can get someone to figure out why I can't reinstall it.
