Didn't we used to have some PC's in a Trader Caravan? I vaguely recall come posts, but I can't find anything. Was it all in my head or from NPC's?
A loooooooong time ago I believe there was a PC trader caravan, but it was at least four years ago (before I joined at least).
In this vein, where can I find information on Trader Caravans? Any books or references in particular? Maybe some posts here that describe their ins and outs as they relate to Triad?
Hmm, okay. It must have been somebody who did a NPC storyline I am remembering.
Well, that leads me to another question then, is anybody interested in a little brainstorming session to start up a trader group?
Kurt- Renegades of Pern would probably give you a fair bit of info about the Caravans. As to Triad, there doesn't seem to be much. :)
Cali, your post has good timing. Kurt was mulling over creating a Trader character just last night!
Really? Well I was re-reading Eragon where they were talking about a caravan and it reminded me that I always wanted to make a sona for one but I'd forgotten about it.
DragonsDawn and maybe Chronicles has some stuff too, but that would have to be taken very broadly since so much time has passed. Todd's dragon books I think have some too... at the mining camp I think, but again it's very early on in the timeline.
I always viewed Traders as gypsy like folk. :)
Pity there's no "All about Merchant Caravans on Pern" guide anywhere.
What, me lazy? :sleepy2:
Yeah, I kind of imagine them like that too. Only really business oriented, like the travelling flea market people you see along I-70.
Kurt- if we put enough effort into it, we could come up with our own guide. :D
Maybe they're like Carnies!
Cali- See, that violates my code o' laziness. ;)
Edit: My winking smiley has a santa hat on. Christmas in September, I suppose?
Except not creepy :D
I always get the feeling that the santa hat smileys are just really drunk and they don't realize the date
Would you consider making your trader caravan go near the riverboats? :geek:
That would be the 6-5-4 route on this picture (http://www.triadweyrs.org/picture.php?pc_id=4) ... from Emerald Falls past the rebuilding Topaz SeaHold and on to Dolphin Cove Weyr.
Sure I'd consider it... I'd probably consider it even more if you just happened to get involved in our plotting and you became a constant reminder... (we need a roping you in smiley)
LOL!
Perhaps we should compile a list of questions about traders, and then try and fill in results? Sort of mini-faq/guide thing or what-have you. Then perhaps the council could "bless" it, so there'd be no Canon issues down the road.
Cuz, honestly, I don't know anything at all about trader-types.
I remember when I was poking around before joining, I saw the Trader Caravan section in "Elsewhere on Pern" and thought that sounded pretty cool. (Actually, everything in the SWE section is cool.) I am also a bit lazy :-P but it sounds like a lot of fun.
Oh I'm so horrible at writing up stuff... anybody like that sort of thing? I wonder if some other PBEM's have Trader write ups anywhere for us to go off of? Anyone been in a club that had one?
Glad you asked Cali... =)
I'm a lurker at Kadanzer Weyr and they have a number of articles about Trader Caravans. Some of the information, of course, wouldn't pertain to Triad, but other information is very general and is interesting. What are the rules surrounding using another club's resources? I don't want to do anything illegal.
Well personally I'd love to use something like that as kind of a base (since I don't envy making one from scratch), with us making tweaks to fit triad, but if somebody thinks it might be a bit shady, I'd have no problem asking them for permission. Do you have any links? If nothing else we can get a general idea with it by just peeking.
I have links, but in order to access this area of their website, you need to join the club (which costs nothing and is easy to do, but might not be something you're interested in). Because it is relatively easy for anyone to access the site, if you want, I can e-mail the pdfs of all the caravan documents I could find. However, if we do want to put something together using their documents as a foundation, I think it would be a good idea for someone to ask permission from them.
Well, why don't you email me something and if it looks like something we can even use we can get with the triad council and this other weyr's council about sharing, sourcing, etc.
Sounds good. If anyone else wants the info, you can e-mail me, or join Kadanzer Weyr.

Usual rules. I'll make an NPC family member but not a real PC. I am up to my a$$ in alligators when it comes to PCs I'm trying to keep active every month!

That would be a smiley with a sign saying "Over here, sucker!" wouldn't it?
At least me and Mikel used to have trader-PC's. Licteik (not sure if I spelled it right)- clan travelled between Garnet valley and Dragonsfalls Weyr and there were even a schedule somewhere where was the Caravan's route and when they were where. That was before my maternity-break 2004-2005.
I've written up a bit for the Trader Caravans, but it's far from ready to submit for approval. Would anyone who is interested in creating a sona for the Caravans collaborate with me in polishing it up?
Do not forget the nifty caravan maps
*beams proudly*
That map is awesome. Paula mentioned a old schedule that went with those maps, do you know where they are?
*sadness* I think I misplaced them three computers ago, unless they are buried in the FAQ's somewhere
Email me Cali!
Cali, you can e-mail me too!
Will do!
If the Caravan gets rolling, I might have Zanen join up. He's friendly with at least one Trader group, and I need something for him to do.
I could, after all I used to have a trader-sona and I'm willing to create a new one or re-active the old one (depens which caravan).
The traders are still something I'd like to get going, but honestly it hasn't been a big focus for me lately. I've gotten some good feedback from Amanda and Francesca and have written up a bit on them. If anyone really wants to take it over I'll give you what we have, if not, I'll still work on it here and there when I'm bored. :)
Hey Cali, why don't you send me what you have. :)
**pokes the trader caravan people**
Remember there is a forum for SWE which would be great for plotting in. Right now only the riverboat people use it but it's open to all the SWE folk. It's a request to join forum, via User Control Panel - User Groups.
And, even more importantly, SWE is the bonus location for persona creation in January (10 marks for creating a persona for a SWE location) which also means it will be the bonus location for posting for February and March (an extra 3 marks per post in a SWE location).
I think this might just mean it's an auspicious sort of time to get that trader caravan launched. :geek:
That's very tempting, Jane. ;-)
Cali, any updates on what you have been working on? I'd be happy to read anything over.
Lately, no. I've passed it over to Amanda to play with for a bit as any computer time not spent coposting has been used to work on my son's PTO Winter Carnival that I'm organizing. I'm scouring the internet for great deals on fish bowls, funny hats, pirate treasure, posters, candy fish, and other odd items of that same sort. ;)
If Amanda hasn't whipped something up I'll probably dive back into it mid January when all the Carnival stuff is over. Unless of course I just get bored in front of the computer one day, then I might start working on it again. :)
Put it in the SWE forum and then you can all work on it.
And I can spy on it too! :geek:
