Title: Pern Term(s) for "boyfriend"
Post by: Francesca on August 26, 2008, 05:02:56 PM
I seem to remember reading a thread about this, but I poked around a bit and couldn't find it.  Is the word "boyfriend" used?  If not, what is the Pern equivalent?  The only other word I can think of is "lover," which sounds strange to me.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?  My post is finished and ready to go, but I don't want to use the word "boyfriend" if there's a more acceptable word around.

I don't think I heard of any boy/girlfriend references in any of the books or in posts.

Ummm... I can't even think of what Susha and Turoar referred to each other as??
Rochelle, can you remember??

boyfriend is definitely not the word of choice; we don't really have boyfriends and girlfriends... just people we are seeing, sleeping with, or lovers..... or betrothed LOL

Is it too unwieldy to say "the man she is seeing"?

We have used the word "beau" in posts I believe....

Perhaps that would work?

"Partner" might also work.  I know that mostly means same-sex lover in the States, but elsewhere it can cover the whole spectrum of relationships.

In Holds and Halls "suitor" would also be appropriate.

I think suitor might be the best option. I think I remember reading that in the books somewhere.

Kaysea, I just went through all the posts with Susha and Turoar and they haven't even really dared think about mentioning more than the fact they really like each other -and I doubt Tatitem's favorite reference of "That Boy" really works well for this. :)

I didn't think we'd mentioned anything like that.  I don't have any copies of our posts at the moment, I had another PC meltdown and haven't been able to download the archives since then.

"Suitor" sounds pretty good.  I'll see if it works in the context of the post I'm writing.  Thanks!
