Can anyone tell me why Matthew is upset that I'm not giving him cheese when he's got cheese right in front of him?

My granddaughter once threw a tantrum because I picked up an orange and offered to peel it for her. (No orange skin was harmed in the asking of this question.) Apparently that orange was now RUINED and NO OTHER ORANGE WOULD DO.
Sadly, I am not a good grandma. She howled and screamed and I nearly laughed myself sick!
We often use the 'I'm going to ignore you until you calm down' tactic, but only when we know they're fussing because they just want attention.
