Title: whatamite?
Post by: Amanda N on April 18, 2008, 09:30:11 PM
So Kurt's boss went to Australia and brought us back a small package of vegemite.  Jane and I were talking and she mentioned marmite.

Anyone else here eat either of these?  If so, which one and why that one and not the other?

Way more than I ever needed to know:

I'm a marmite girl myself.  You know!  The Vintner Hall is probably producing marmite as we speak.  Mmmmmmmmmmm.  Marmite!

I've only heard of vegemite because it is mentioned in the song "Land Down Under" by Men at Work  :D  I don't really know what it is though    What is it?  And what is marmite?

This was the bit that was news to me - and will no doubt turn up in a Triad post.

QuoteOf course they're both vegetarian and by-products of beer production.  Some of the difference may be down to the difference between our beers.

The stuff which leaves the brewery is the scrapings from the bottom of the fermenting tank.  Like solidified froth it goes off in open topped barrels to the Marmite factory.

And this is my favourite quote - with special additional bolding from me for Amanda's safety!

QuoteNone of these spreads should be spread thickly.  That's the second mistake most foreigners make.  The first is trying the stuff ...

I shall try to keep that in mind, Jane!

I've tried both, and it's something you eith love or hate.  And I fall into the 'hate' category.

You can get both products in supermarkets here, even flavoured marmite!

Quote from: "emma"... even flavoured marmite!

Flavoured?  Like it isn't about the most flavoured food in the world already??

I've tried both and think that I like marmite better -- not quite as strong as vegemite.

A few years back I had a tasting party with the children in my summer camp (ages 5-12) and they had a fairly even split between which they liked better (only one or two opted for "don't like either" and they were picky eaters anyhow).

On the other hand, a few of the adults were reluctant to try at all.

What sort of time do you call this to be up and answering questions on the forum?

I know, it's early -- but I arrived home last night, pretty much collapsed, and still was awake at my usual time. I was planning to spend the weekend napping but instead had a loooong night's sleep.

When I was younger, one of my camp counselors was Australian. She offered us some vegemite...I don't remember if I actually tasted it, which leads me to believe that I didn't. I certainly remember what it LOOKED like. :]

I had vegimite I think.  i didn't like it at all.  I seem to remember thinking it was too salty, but I'm not sure.  But then I think I tried marmite and didn't mind it as much.

I grew up on marmite! It's best on hot, buttery toast. Or marmite and cheddar cheese sandwiches. Yum! :)

Never tried Vegemite, though.
