I hate tornadoes.
I've only ever seen them on tv. You be careful.
I am sad that tornadoes hurt so many people, but I would totally chase them if my husband would let me.
I just wouldn't tie myself to any pipes with belts and expect it to save me.
Bree, I think I'm far to much of a coward to do that. :}
Yay, we're still alive and the house is still standing. Not so much on sleep, though.
Bree: I swear, what is it with spouses and the way they squelch storm-chasing aspirations. Amanda doesn't buy it when I tell her that storm chasing is safe because you know where the storm is and stay clear. :compress:
Hey, my older brother was in the CNN building when that tornado went over it a few weeks ago. I thought that was the coolest thing ever! My brother got hit by a tornado and LIVED XD
(Of course, I didn't think it was so cool when I first heard. When I first heard I was thinking 'OH MY GOD, MY BROTHER'S IN THERE!')

As I was telling Amanda, we never get tornados... well until recently.
Back during the winter we actually got a tornado warning and one touched down and did a lot of damage a few miles out of the city. It's actually kind of unsettling.
We get tornadoes in the UK too, but not at this time of year.
We had a typhoon spawn a tornado a couple years ago. It tipped a train car over on the tracks, stopping my train which was on the same track an hour up, and so I got stuck 20 minutes from home when the typhoon hit. I ended up taking a $70 taxi ride home through the darn thing (rather than be stuck on a train for 12 hours)
That was as close to a tornado as I've come.
When I was little, me and my family went through hurricane Andrew. Apparently the hurricane was riddled with Tornadoes that touched down, especially just south from where I use to live. Homested was ripped up by the twisters. If you looked at the footage from the after math you could see the trail of where the tornadoes touched down, where they went, and where the funnels lifted off the ground, by following the destruction of all the houses.
Where I lived it was a gorgeous array of vegetation, lushes trees, a park, and there was a beach about a twenty minute walk away. After Hurricane Andrew everything was just gone, and the park had been ripped out of the ground. There were barely any trees left standing, several trees fell on our house, and because of all the debris the twenty minute walk to the beach took three hours. A lot of stuff was also thrown out of the ocean. One of our friends had fish swimming in the pool, while a parking garage we encounter close to the beach had a shark.
Shortly after Hurricane Andrew, we moved to Oregon.
Fortunately we don't have tornadoes. During thunderstorms you can sometimes have trombies, wich are kind of tornado's little-little cousins.

I'm from Kansas in Tornado Alley and I've lived through lots of tornadoes. :D We have tornadoes within 5 miles of my house almost every year, thankfully we haven't had any actually hit *knocks on wood*. Here, you don't buy a house that _doesn't_ have a basement, and you usually spend most of your spring down there just to be on the safe side ;)
I've chased tornadoes too, though not often. When I'm on shift on road patrol (for those that don't know I'm a deputy sheriff) and a call comes, we go to the high points and look out for funnel clouds and if we see one we start following it or get in front of it to warn people out in the country that might not have the TV's on.

I'm in Northeast Ohio and last night we had a tornado warning. The only reason we knew about it was because my boyfriend's parents called telling us to be careful. Nothing ended up happening, besides a lot of rain and some wind. This was my first tornado warning though. Back in California, we just have earthquakes to worry about!

I don't know how impressive it is. :compress: It's a good job though, and I'm 3rd generation, my dad and grandpa were both deputies with the county too.
We just had somebody killed by lightning in New Zealand. :erschreckt:
Not very common here at all.
