Title: What music do we listen to when we write?
Post by: PastMember on March 03, 2008, 02:10:07 PM
Am I the only one, or do other people listen to music when they are writing their posts, or doing writing in general?

When I am working on posts I tend to listen to the Afro Celt albums. My favorite of all their music is "Release", both the vocal and instrumental versions, and it tends to be the source of my Pern related writing inspirations. "Big Cat," "Dark Moon, High Tide," "The Silken Whip," and, Matt's personal favorite, "Shadowman" are also really great to listen when writing... and then there is always the Battlestar Galactica soundtracks 1,2, and 3.

Anytime I am working on my novel writings I always put in the Solaris soundtrack or some old classical music like Bach's "Air on G String." It fits the mood so well, until I get into some action... that normally requires tribal music, Chinese drum music, etc...

Then when it is time to get serious and type out that essay... like I should be doing, but am a horrible procrastinator... I'll listen to anything and everything from rock, to classic rock, classical, chorus, opera, rap, techno, Monty Python... The Itunes random button is great for this.

I'm a silence sort of girl.  No background noise for me.

I'm the same as Jane.  I usually can't have any music or TV in the background unless its something I don't really know/care about.  If I do have music on, it usually has to be without words.  I tend to pay attention to the words much more closely than the rhythm or the melody, so I find it distracting.

However, I do need music on when I'm cleaning house ;)

Usually I need to have it silent when I'm writing.  But sometimes I do listen to music, some examples being Amethystium, Enya....  One time, I did listen to Linkin Park's "Encore/Numb" on repeat when I wrote an angry Trae post...but that's the only time  :D

General writing -- television or the noise of a cafe.
Writing where I have a deadline or word count that I'm shooting for -- silence.

I love music! I don't, however, have a particular soundtrack to write to. I don't know if that makes me odd or not. :P

Right now, Beck just booted Modest Mouse off the CD player.

I keep on hearing about Modest Mouse... I should listen to some of their stuff sometime.

I prefer music on the background when I'm writing, or when I was studying for a exam. (I could remember what I read by remembering the music I heard.) I'm also a kinetic person: I remember it better if I have written it down. My fingers are constantly doing something.

When I'm on the treadmill I love music - the louder the better.

However, when writing, silence, the quieter the better.

Which is why I prefer writing at night when I can have peace and quite and no three year old demanding cordial or noodles. LOL

It's generally whatever I have on for my children.  This is usually children's music.  After their asleep, I keep the house quiet so it doesn't wake them. :-D
